In order to get into any webpage I need to type http://....
Otherwise It would remain in there and do nothing, It would just highlight what I have typed....
If I type www.dell.com It wouldn't get me anywhere, it would just get highlighted... I must type http://www.dell.com in order to get into the webpage....
The same thing would happen if I try from Windows Explorer...
Does anyone know how to solve this , any Ideas ?

What internet browser are you using?
-
Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2
-
So you're using Internet Explorer? That may be the problem... It messes up oddly a lot, for me anyway.
Try getting Opera or Firefox, I like opera better but both are good. -
lol, regards, Trying sfc /scannow solved the issue
-
opera is great!
-
Come on, what kind of advice is that, change web browsers?
That isn't a solution to a problem, it's a work around, you may as well of told him to completely reinstall windows to fix the problem.
Nothing against Firefox, it's a great web browser I use exclusively on my LINUX systems, but it isn't a fix to a simple problem for IE.
Just click TOOLS in IE, select Internet Options from the menu, then the ADVANCED tab, at the bottom of that little window you'll see a button to "RESTORE DEFAULTS", clicking that button should undo what you've done to cause this.
I think your all spoiled any how, darn me an my old school ways, I type the full URL (including the http:// part) into my address bar all the time anyhow, I just can't help it, old habbits are hard to break. -
Well, I hate using IE, and everytime I see someone still using IE and having problems, I offer changing browsers, it's not very painful, and the other browsers are much better than IE. It's a better solution, really...
Look at it this way, if you have a ****py old car that keeps breaking down, and you can get a brand new wonderfully working free car, would you get the old ****py car fixed or get the nice new one?
You know it could also not be his fault, it could be IE's, I had a lot of weird stuff happen to me back when I used it... -
Try reinstalling IE. See if that helps.

I hear you, I also agree, Firefox is a better browser in my opinion as well, but it's not a fix for the problem he's having.
For every problem believe it or not there is usually a very simple fix. I seriously doubt though the software has much to blame. If that was the case EVERYONE out there using it would be having the same exact problems and we know this isn't the case.
This isnt a "known issue" with IE, so you have to conclude it's something gone wrong on the users end, like a crazy setting they selected somewhere or some garbage third party app they installed doing it. No matter what, when you have 1 person out of probably 10 billion out there using the same software and they have a uniqe problem, it's a guarantee it's something on the user end causing the problem.
When you can search Google for such a problem and find nothing that pertains to an issue like described, you can conclude it's likely a local problem, it's also just as likely the same person can manipulate the same settings in any web browser and end up with the same problem. -
what does sfc /scannow do? -
I tried that, beleive me....
It didn't work, I tried messing also with security settings and that didn't work neither....
I reinstalled it using sfc. -
Sfc = System File Checker
It would try to reinstall any corrupted windows missing file it can find. This is also a way to reinstall IE.
Esoterica, actually the issue happened on 2 brand new I9400 out of the box, so the settings came as default. Believe me I tried every setting I could think of, It was harder than that. I had to reinstall IE on both of them -
Wow...talk about coincidences. I read this thread yesterday and while I was at my parents' house this morning my sister was complaining about the non-responsive address bar. It worked when typing 'http://' at the beginning of the address. Hmm...I think I can fix this...
At that time though this thread had only gotten to 'what does sfc /scannow' . I googled that and got: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html among other links and info.
I ran it...it didn't seem to fix anything...but after a reboot things were running like butter again. Plus the fact that the system hadn't been rebooted for 209 days (Control Panel/Network Internet Connections/Network Connections/Local Area Connection/Duration: 209 Days)

My friend has the same issue. Has this been resolved?
-
This isn't intended to solve any problems, it's just a little gee-wiz I discovered the other day. Just type in "dell" (or whatever) and hit Ctrl and Enter. The "http://www." and ".com" parts get populated automatically.

Get Opera? I had my fair share of problems with firefox as well, not even close to IE, but a good few. So far Opera has worked perfectly for me.
It wouldn't technically solve it, however it'd give a good run-around that'd keep you tied over until you either found how to fix it or decided to keep using it instead of FF. -
Ok, I was reading this on digg.
This should fix it

You are right. It was the windows update. But the the suggested registry fix did nothing. I finally found and deleted the update.
Thanks for the reply! -
MS will release an update to fix this problematic update soon.

Ouch, well I tried
