I bought a "Windows Vista Capable" Dell Inspiron 6400 in December. Unfortunately, I can only get a free upgrade to Windows Vista Home Basic. Does anybody know if I can get a discount on Home Premium or something?
Would Home Premium even work well with my computer? I have 1GB of memory, a Core Duo processor (2x T2050 @ 1.60GHz), and ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 video card.
Does Microsoft Office XP work on Vista? What about Photoshop CS2, Adobe Illustrator CS, and the Macromedia MX suite?

I doubt you can get a discounted version of Vista unfortunatly. I suggest if you are a student looking into getting an academic version they are only $75 or so for an upgrade to Home Premium, also check out the OEM copies as they are less expensive as well.
However on the bright side yes Vista will work perfectly fine on your notebook, I can also tell you that Photoshop CS2,Premier Pro, Illustator, and the Macromedia MS suite all run perfectly fine on Vista. I've heard that Office XP works well too while in compatibility mode.
Good luck. -
im sure they upgrade you to vista home premium for a little extra (i'll check up tho) and the dell 6400 runs vista very well(i've had mine running vista ultimate RC1/RC2 nicely
), i'll add another reply when i found out if you can upgrade to premium for a little extra

And if I am not a student, do you know how much it would be to upgrade? I hadn't thought of getting my free copy of Basic, then upgrading. I can probably to that for cheaper than buying Premium even if I'm not a student, eh?

ok, from ebuyer.com

If I understand that correctly, I can buy an upgrade from XP Home to Vista Home Premium for a total of $94 from this site?
And if I did this, I wouldn't even mess with my free upgrade to Home Basic from Dell... What about getting my Home Basic, then upgrading from that to Home Premium? That's what I was asking about (that would probably be cheaper, eh?)
So, can I get a discounted price on Home Premium from Dell instead of getting Home Basic? -
but you'd have to give microsoft that 94 not ebuyer...
i think -
That seems quite pricey. Do you know how much Home Premium costs if you just go and buy it at a store?
-
Okay, newegg.com has Vista Premium for $120 ( http://promotions.newegg.com/msvista/Vista_Products.html).
I think if I have to spend $94 on an upgrade, it might be more worth it to just buy the full thing for $120, plus it will ship a lot faster. Thoughts? -

Ok, let's start over. You get a free upgrade to Vista Home Basic, so install it. Once you have Vista installed, you can easily upgrade to a higher version by clicking the Start menu and then finding Windows Anytime Upgrade.
I don't know what the ebuyer thing is. -
All versions of Vista come on the same CD - Basic, Home Preminum, etc - and the DVD installs the components according to the serial you enter. It's just a matter of calling MS to buy another serial (Home Preminum) to enable those features.
