Since yesterday my cd rom drive just disappeared right off my device manager list and devices and printers list in windows 7. It was working fine ever since i upgraded until yesterday.
I'm also unable to open the cd drive, whenever i push the button nothing happens.

Is this a software or my cd drive problem?

Could be either one, but the first thing to do is a google search for "High low filters" (without the quotes). Some cd/dvd burner software screws up some registry settings that cause this effect. But, the solution is easy.

I googled the high low filters solution, about deleting the registry keys associated with it, but my registry has none of the high low filters files it tells me to delete. So I'm assuming its a defective cd drive?

Might want to check in BIOS to see if it not enabled, but doesn't sound good.

Well if that's the case, it might be the drive itself. Is the drive in a media bay and easily removable? If so remove it and reseat it. Beyond that a service call may be in order.

How do you check in BIOS to see if its not enabled? All i did was check where the computer chooses to boot from but the CD drive wasn't being detected there either.

What laptop is it? some laptops have applications that disable the drives to save power when in certain modes (asus).

Its a toshiba satellite A300, about 16 months old, this was never a problem in the past, and my warranty has expired :(
In the bios it simply says "Optical drive: None"

There is your answer. If the BIOS doesn't see it, it is dead or not connected. Can it be removed without taking the case apart?

I will have to unscrew the bottom of my laptop to take it out, i haven't done this before so I might find out how much replacement would cost anyway.

    Thanks

To take the optical drive out you will need to take the RAM cover off. Take the RAM out. On one side there will be a very small screw that holds in the optical drive. You may need an extremely small screwdriver. Once that screw is undone, you should be able to just push it out from the inside.
