My friend is experiencing some BSOD and automatic restarts and I assume that it is because of overheating. His system is the following:

    Compaq Presario s4120wm
amd athlon (tm) xp2600+ 2.13 ghz
    Nvidia Geforce FX 5200
    1gb Kingston Pc2700 ram

    The error code he keeps getting is this: Error code 0000009c, parameter1 00000001, parameter2 8054d570, parameter3 f6002000, parameter4 00000152.

I am asuming its either his video card or his processor overheating but I am probably wrong.

Overheating desktop sounds rare... listen for running fans (better yet pop the cover and look at them), and check for clogging dust.

How can you tell when your desktop is getting too hot?

Usually, the desktops won't get too hot because of the huge space in between the main components. I believe the only way it will overheat is when 1. you overclock, 2. you're using the computer in a hot room with no ventilation, 3. the back part of the pc where the exhausts are being blocked. So all-in-all pcs are really hard to overheat. Another possibility is that the fan malfunctions and the only cooling system you have is the heat sinks.
