You don't know that, there is not nearly enough information to make that diagnosis.

What happens when you try to install windows? BSOD? No HDD found? What is the model of the laptop?

That's almost certainly corrupted .Windows files caused by a failing hard drive.

If you have another computer handy, you could take the hdd out of the computer that won't start, put it in an external enclosure, then hook it up to the other computer and run some diagnostics utilities to find out what condition it's in. I'd bet good money that'd find that the drive's got a whole bunch of bad sectors.

Alternatively, you could download either a linux liveCD, which will boot from CD and allow you to run hdd diagnostics under linux, or the UltimateBootCD, which will also boot from CD and has a number of hdd diagnostics on it that you can use to test the hdd.

If that's the source of the problem, in order to get the old computer back up, you'll have to get a new hdd to replace the old one, and then reinstall .Windows, so hopefully you kept your old recovery CDs.

This happened to a friend of mine.

I popped in my harddrive and it worked.
