I know I dont have the fastest setup out there but I dont really think it should be using so much ram at idle.

    I only have 2gb ram

In the backround I have Skype w/Skylink, McAfee, Rivatuner, Realtek HD audio manager,

I followed the vista tweaks guidelines on here any ideas?

Thats normal, on boot Vista usually uses about 900mb+ and slowly slowly gets up to 1gb, add the few programs you got running and you got your answer.

A good saying is unused RAM is wasted RAM.

Windows caches in unused RAM. RAM is very fast and when your computer needs the space, the cache area is made smaller.

    My laptop is using 1.55/4GB

    Precisely.

Background Windows processes will free up RAM should your programs require it, so there's no reason for concern. Plus, Skype and McAfee are hardly light RAM users.

    Ugh!

Saying the RAM is being used is WRONG. Vista and 7 have AWESOME memory management. Basically, it "learns" which programs you use the most, and caches them to RAM during boot, so they start faster when you open it.

Now, the smart thing about Vista and 7... if you do something that requires a chunk of RAM being filled by that cache, it will clear the appropriate amount of RAM needed for the new application.

More RAM = More breathing room. Empty Ram = Wasted. Period.

The use of system resources as idle is not important.

That your system releases resources and reallocates them based on user demands is important.
