My laptop thinks it has a touchscreen = no mouse (trackpad) functionality

I installed updates yesterday without reading what it was (just installed everything Windows Update found). One of them was for touchscreen/tablet pc's - something along the lines of IdeaTechnologies or something (don't have the laptop to hand).
Now my laptop seem to think it has a touchscreen (which it doesn't), and the trackpad has lost all functionality.

I looked at mouse/input devices in control panel and didn't see anything that could help. I disabled touch screen features in the Enable/Disable windows components thing, no avail.

I went into system restore which said it had been disabled, which I know I did but thought I re-enabled, as every time I update it says "Creating Restore Point." Do these restore points exist and if so how can I access them?

I would check "add/remove programs"(Start>Control Panel>Add/remove programs) and see if there is something named Idea Technologies. Then remove that. I would create a restore point before doing that.

If not, I would search my hard drive using worlds like "Idea", "screen" and see what comes up.

Have you tried installing the chipset drivers and/or system software for your laptop?

I had checked that too, including windows updates. Meant to say that. Thanks though.

    No, touchpad drivers might work....
    Thanks for the idea

purplegreendave: Can you post either the solution or a link to the solution in the Dell forum? I am having the same problem after mistakenly applying that update to my XPS M1710. I've Googled and searched the Dell forums in vain trying to find the solution. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Go into Device Manager, find IdeaCom PS/2 or whatever it is and disable it :D

The way I fixed it here at work is to go to device manager and manually update the TouchScreen driver, the only option it gives you is a PS/2 mouse which, after a restart, makes the touch pad work again.

This has caught lots of people out here as they all like to be helpful and install all the windows updates available....

Thanks, all, for the help. I ended up uninstalling the "IdeaCom HID Touch Screen" driver. The trick is that you have to check the "delete driver..." box when you uninstall else it may come back. Once I did that I was able to reinstall the trackpad driver.

    What a pain!

Here is a link to the Dell forum where this same issue is being discussed: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19252028.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=&s=gen

I delt with the exact same issue after the Vista update. After removing the IdeaCom HID in Device Manager the trick was when I re-installed the original Touch Pad Driver I had to run the setup program under a right click "Run as Administrator", and that is what got my touch pad working properly again.

Only thing that worked for me was to do a system restore to the point before the update was installed.
