Hey everyone,
I recently purchased a compaq v2000 series notebook. It has been working great for me until recently some very strange and annoying things have been going wrong. First it was internet explorer...I noticed one day that I could not access web pages by typing in the address bar. At first I thought it was a network connection problem but later I tried typing in http:// before the address and it works fine, but w/ out that it does not work. Now I have been noticing that it freezes alot and just today I found out that everytime I try to open a picture the windows picture and fax viewer freezes completely and the system is completely unresponsive. I tried ctrl alt delete but windows picture and fax viewer wasnt even listed in the running programs list. So everytime I try to open a photo to view it in windows picture and fax viewer the system crashes and I have to press and hold the power button to restart it. I dont know what to do now...I have AVG antivirus and lavasoft adware and windows defender antispyware running on my computer. I made sure they were updated and ran a full system scan w/ both adware and avg antivirus (free version), avg found no viruses and adware found some spyware (usually does evertime I run a scan) I removed the spyware that adware found but the same problems still occur. Any one have any idea what is going on here? Any alternative antivirus/antispyware programs I can try that might be more reliable? I dont know if it is a virus or what but it sure seems like one to me....
Thanks for any help!
Dan

Maybe you can re-install windows again, and imo you can try Kaspersky(not free) or Zone Alarm.

Sounds like you were hit by that virus discovered earlier this year that MSFT refused to issue an earlier patch until this guy showed them up and posted it on their web. To learn more and find the patch go to the following:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/912840.mspx
Go to Microsoft update for the patches as well:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
If you don't want the work around and don't mind not seeing the thumbnails of your files - you could type in the following:
Go to start, then run, then copy & past the following:
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
to reverse that: regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
Antivirus, anti-spyware were unsuccessful in finding and correcting this issue. I hope this helps. -

Have you run Windows Updates lately? Have the problems occurred since then?
Microsoft added some new stuff to it that's causing some problems for certain users; those running Kerio Firewall and some HP-based Share-to-Web software. Instability, users reporting problems running MS Office, accessing folders like My Documents, etc.
It's described in their knowledge base: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165
I know someone who was having trouble saving Excel files, among other things. Not sure if you're experiencing the same problems, but it might be a possibility. -
I would suggest if possible to use a browser that is not Internet Explorer like Firefox or Opera to name a few. You'll have less problems. I personally have been using NetVeda's SafetyNet firewall lately. Seem to have less issues than ZoneAlarm and less annoying than Kerio.

Hi Dan, I can bet that your problem is latest windows update. It has conflicts with HP stuff and Kerio. See this thread and search more and you will find how to fix it. You don,t need to reinstall ur windows as it will not help u at all. Same with any virus/ spyware scan.

I think same problem. I posted a solution in that thread. -
Thanks for the help everyone...sutheep I found your thread and found in the link that someone posted the solution where you go to Run and type in sfc /scannow and after this is done running restart. Well I did this and now everything is back to normal, at least it seems to be so far. The address bar problem and the windows picture viewer is fixed. I never even knew about this function before...Im just glad it was such a simple solution.
Thanks again!
