Sounds like your recycle bin is corrupted. Try using a Ccleaner instead, its a must have tool.

I did one better. I re-formatted and re-installed vista. Does the same thing. Maybe it's a SP 2 thing.

Well, I'm sure many people have used SP2 without that error, so we're looking at a problem specific to you. So to clarify, you get an error message box saying that Windows Explorer has stopped responding... or what?

    Thanks...

The OS is in another language. I do not thik it will help if I posted a screenshot of it as you would not understand what it means. The SP 2 was installed on a microsoft update download, not a DVD.

Yep. As soon as I click on my trash bin to recover something it just stops responding and I get the error that says Explorer has stopped responding. Weird, is it not? Do you think it has something to do with me turning off UAC?

It could also be a corrupted file (image/video), and the trash bin trying to load the thumbnail preview. Try to set as default mosaic view and see what happens.

I have not tried it in safe mode but I like the thumbnail preview reason. I'll try it when I get home tonite and let you know. Thanks.

This happened to me number of times in Vista 64-bit and Win 7 RC 64-bit when emptying large files in recycle bin and moving large files to the recycle bin.

Try installing a different OS like Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Anyway, Linux OS is very easy and takes less time to install. After installation, check and see if the trash bin still gets weird.

I think my recycle bin acted similarly weird like yours before. Tried reformatting, downloading free error cleaners, etc. None worked. However, after all the trial and errors, only two things solved my problem: 1) downloaded a unique free error repairer and cleaner called IOBit System Care and IOBit Security 360 that both fixed my "weird" trash bins caused by browser crashes, errors, registry, antimalware, antispyware, anti-adware, anti-Trojan, anti-bots, and other related system malfunctions which may also be obtain through downloads and file transfers. IOBit does not create conflict with any anti-virus, it is actually the best mate you can pair up with your anti-virus.

    2) switched to Linux OS, particularly, Ubuntu 9.04

Try checking these sites for detailed info:

I do not understand why it hangs when I click on a file to return it to it's original folder. I must and have to remove this from the trash bin. So please do not recommend reformatting. It is out of the question. The file has to be removed first.
I can't even touch any file without it hanging and restarting explorer. The only thing that seems to work is right clicking on the trash bin icon and choosing empty bin. Otherwise it won't let me touch any files.
