Hi - I've recently purchased a Lenovo N200 (dual core T5450 with 2GB Ram) which comes with MS Vista. One thing that I have noticed is that it takes AGES to boot. It's OK up until you log in, but when Vista starts up slowly loads things for 5-10 minutes before it's usable.
msconfig's startup tab contains 37 items - isn't this a bit overkill? Is there any thing that I can safely disable, or do you have any general tips about how to speed things up? Thanks!
-
msconfig is a great tool to help boost your speed. generally you can see the "bloatware" if there is any. with 5-10 min you either have bloatware or you have mcafee installed lol. but seriously, in msconfig there are things that you want to keep as start up, but for instance a lot of program have their own settings and you can specify that you don't want them to load up. me, for instance, my laptop has an encrypting software and fingerprint reader software that i never use, so i just uninstalled them (didnt need to do msconfig) i had norton trial (uninstalled and wiped from registry), and a bunch of useless programs that i uninstalled. i use msn messenger, but sparingly, so i disabled the system tray at windows start up (booted 20 seconds faster), and basically just did the same with other programs that i use but don't need at the boot up. the only things i left at boot up were battery miser, my nod32 antivirus, my external soundcard settings, and onscreen display (which just shows what each FN key does when i press it).
sometimes programs u uninstall are left in msconfig in the startup tab, i just uncheck those (you can see the file path of each component that is runnin at startup so don't get confused when you see things like Iaanotif or HDASHCut.
my rule is: if i can't understand what it does, its probably important.
note: if you have mcafee or norton as your antivirus my suggestion is that you uninstall them and get a better antivirus that doesn't run on 40% of your cpu... even though it might not say it, mcafee and norton take up ALOT of memory. Nod32 is safer, more reliable, and uses virtually no memory on your cpu, you won't be disappointed. other good antivirus software are kaspersky, im sure there are others, i just have never used other ones. nod32 was the best 70 bucks that i've ever spent. -
Well, this is what's in my startup - not quite sure what's what...

sd99,
I've moved your thread to the Windows OS and Software section. You should receive better assistance there. Good luck. -
well its totally not Windows fault that you have so much stuff in your computer.
Just do a clean install and your be golden. -
I second Knightendo's idea. Is there any way you can do a fresh Vista installation? There is NO reason start-up on a new system (even with bloatware) should take more than 2-4 minutes. Ideally it should be under a minute from power button to usable interface.
If a reinstall does nothing, it is possible you have a faulty hard drive. But I think it is much more likely this is some strange software issue. -
First, go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Uninstall a program, and uninstall anything you know you don't want.
Then, go to Control Panel > Programs > Stop a program from running at startup > Show for all users. This opens Defender's startup programs manager... it can give a little more info than msconfig.
Although some things are obvious. You don't really need us to tell you that you don't need Adobe Speed Launcher or Lenovo Camera Application Launcher... do you? And you can probably make a pretty good guess about what Diskeeper Systray probably is, and decide whether you want it or not. Google can also help to find out what some of the less obvious processes are. And if you disable something and later decide you do want it, it's easy enough to re-enable it.
I recommend leaving the Synaptics process enabled if you use your touchpad. And you can decide if you want your fingerprint reader software or not. The others... well, I somehow seem to get by without them.
btw I have 6 things showing under msconfig's startup tab... and 12 under Defender's startup programs manager.
