The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

Welcome to the NotebookReview Forum BOINC Team! [IMG]</align>

What's the difference between Folding@Home and BOINC?
BOINC and Folding@Home are 2 different distributed computing projects. BOINC has been used to produce projects such as POEM@Home, SETI@Home, PrimeGrid, etc. For more information on specific projects, you may go to the list of projects here. The goal of Folding@Home, POEM@Home, GPUGRID (Nvidia only ?), and RNA World is to fold proteins for scientific research. Other BOINC distributed projects may include mathematics, searching for extraterrestrial life, cryptography, etc.

Why did I start a BOINC team for NotebookReview Forums?
I have been a folding for our Folding@Home team for more than a year. During this time, I haven't seen an initiative for our forums in the BOINC side of distributed computing. Although this project was mentioned many times across the forums, I didn't see a NotebookReview Forum team. After looking into BOINC, I found that these projects have been supporting AMD GPUs as much as nVidia GPUs and CPUs. This isn't the same as the Folding@Home project, which had many issues reported and the lack of fair acknowledgement for AMD GPUs. So, to put my GPU to better means, I have created this team (its been set as "International").

    How do I start contributing?
    Download BOINC (latest version 7.0.28)

Install BOINC and the installation should ask to restart your computer, be sure to save any important data you have open in your other applications before you restart.

When you start the application after you install BOINC, you may now select a project you would like your computer to work on. Many of these projects have support for Intel/AMD CPUs, nVidia GPUs, and AMD/ATI GPUs. Select the project you want to compute for and create an account with your email address and a new password.

Login page of a example BOINC project:

Click on the "create an account" to continue to an account creation page:

After successfully registering for your account, login and you should see this page:

On you computer, start up "BOINC Manager" and go to your preferences (Tools >> Computing preferences):

You may want to uncheck "While computer is on batteries" if you're on a laptop. Check the "Use GPU while computer is in use" to enable GPU work units. If you've already started computing, use the "Update" command to request AMD or Nvidia GPU work units. BOINC should automatically download the corresponding program and begin computing.
