I'm sure a computer has been programmed to bypass that sorta problem?

My old compaq presario was left plugged in for months and its been two years now the battery still has a good amount of charge left. It's decreased about 25% I would say thats pretty good

even if there are designs to make the current to bypass the battery once it's charged, the heat generated from the laptop still causes the battery to wear. So it's better to keep it in your drawer when not used.

Not so fast. Carefully read what that long report said, and you'll find there is some truth to what BOTH of you were saying. Once the battery is fully charged the computer does indeed turn off the circuit. But all lithium batteries will self discharge. And once it drops back down to a certain level, the charging circuit will turn back on and top off the battery.

Apparently, according to the article the ideal situation is to keep the battery at around a 40% charge and on some laptop models there is an app that will do just that. Some folks pull the battery out when it reaches that level. But I would guess they would need to periodically check to see what level it's at. Because again according to the article you NEVER want to let it reach a 0% charge.

oK guys, you are going to hate me. I installed automz for vista and now I have the num lock enabled every time I reboot. this problem was discussed way back on page 86ish. Now Nic. said:
"Search around and i found myself a registry trick of turning it off....

Go to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard and find the String value InitialKeyboardIndicators.

And below are what the binary number represent.

0-Turns off Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock
    1-Turns on Caps Lock
    2-Turns on Num Lock
3-Turns on Caps Lock and Num Lock
    4-Turns on Scroll Lock
5-Turns on Caps Lock and Scroll Lock
6-Turns on Num Lock and Scroll Lock
7-Turns on Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock

I've found mine been changed to 2, so now i switch it back to 0.

    Hope this helps."

Now how do I get to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard? Is this just normal control panel? If it is, then I don't have an option anywhere that is even remotely close to "String value InitialKeyboardIndicators" ...Help me please.... :(

This is so odd. I still swear by AutoMz and have used it on my M1330, my wifes U300, my oldest boys new U200 as well as my youngest' Compaq laptop as well.

I have never had this or any other problem with this program.

Having said that, i know of many who have had problems. This is so weird.

    hmmm..
thats all I can explain. I have UAC disabled, and a couple of registry tweaks as per what you have mentioned..in fact I have used the registry tweaks provided by speedyvista.com..

however, when I moved on to point 6, to turn off windows features, the Windows Features Window showed nothing. It was just blank..there was no option or folders or anything. Could I have disabled the whole turn on/off feature by any chance?

Just pure white, like what you would see in an empty folder..

I know the description is terrible, but thats the best I can say.

    This?

~Click the start menu, type “run” and hit enter.
~Type “msconfig” in the box and hit enter.
~Select the “boot” tab at the top, and then place a check mark next to the “No GUI Boot”
~Hit “apply” then hit “ok” and restart your machine.

No, not that. He's referring to a thread that was made in which i linked to some videos showing you how to create a custom boot screen for Vista. I'm afraid i can't help him as i don't remember the thread though.

    Les,
I am having a problem at boot up like icedout did, flashing black screens which seems to take a while delaying the boot up. This was your reply to him, i uninstalled avg but i still get the flashing black screens at boot up. How did you fix this? are there any registry values i should delete? I already used ccleaner to try and delete the registry values but that was a no go.

Did you use ScuderiaConchiglia's boot defragment utility?

Also, does this black screen appear before or after the Vista logon screen appears?

    M1330, T7500, 250gb, led screen.

Last week i did a clean reinstall and went through your tweaks, i did disable tmm. I did run the defrag and i actually ran it again today after uninstaling avg. Still no luck, my startup time is about 1:40 mins and the black screens appear before the circular vista logo and after the scrolling green loading bar. I have barely installed any programs since the reinstall so i dont see why the startup times so bad. I read someone experiencing this problem on your forum and they said it was from the avg (one of the only programs i installed) so i uninstalled it, but i am still getting these flashing black screens. Thanks!

I have never had that problem with the AVG but I might consider a Clean Install once again. It sounds like there was a conflict and the program was deleted leaving a ghost registry entry or two which can't be rid of.

When you start it may be hanging on that entry which is searching for the program. Just a thought.

    Hi Les,

I'm using an XPS m1530. I followed the majority of your tweaks, and they seem to be working great. However, I just had one small issue today. Randomly, my screen started turning white, and it was showing random characters. Then it turned a distorted blue and froze in that position. I tried shutting it down by pressing the power button, but I had to turn it off forcefully by holding down the power button. I suspect either a faulty video card or I messed up on one of your tweaks. Have you ever had or heard of any problems related to mine? What do you think the problem is and how can I fix it? Is it a one time thing or is this normal for Vista? Any kind of input would be very much appreciated thanks!

One thing I noticed is that Msconfig NO GUI boot thing that gives you a differnet look on boot causes a longer boot time for me.

My boot time is 32 seconds right now without it and with it on it's like 37

Ooook.. so heres another question... i'm on 32 bit, and i took the page cache off. with 4gb ram-3.1 showing.. when i play games i'm only utilizing 70-80% of my ram and it keeps popping alerts up saying i should close my game to prevent any data loss, ( i just ignore it)

sooo the question actually is... can i take away the page cache, and use a ready boost SD card to replace it instead?

What POSSIBLE reason could there be to turn off the pagefile? You already see warnings from the operating system because you did this. This urban myth that removing the pagefile makes the machine faster has yet to be backed up by a single ounce of proof. I have not seen any sort of side by side scientific comparison done. All the reports are anecdotal. "It feels faster dooood, so it must be good idea". Bull$heyet.

Although I don't want to argue with pagefile again, if your pc is telling you that its using that much ram why the hell would you just ignore it.
What game are you playing that uses 2.5gb ram? Enable it back. Readyboost will hardly do anything. Although you can try.

Btw Gary, having page filing on or off for me makes no difference. I never said it felt faster or anything. I just heard that if you disable it, your pc will be faster. I realized that how I use my computer I will never use anything close to my 3gb ram so why not try it. There were no risks involved in losing my work.

The question is not if you saw any performance degredation. The question is did you see any IMPROVMENT. If not, then why bother to disable it? McGrady says for him there is no difference in performance between having it off and on. So again what is the point of turning it off?

The pagefile is more of a "safety" feature to insure you don't loose any work when, or if, you do run out of RAM. It is like driving your car without seat belts. It makes no difference performance wise, but it makes a huge difference in the event of an accident.

thats pretty damn close...a leak from a program can get you there. just enable it back on in case. if you had 1.5gb or more free then maybe you'd be ok. When my ram usage is at its peak i have over 1.75gb free still or more. pagefile on or off, the speed is the same. i didnt notice anything, no placebo either.

    A bit OT,

Can anyone tell me why my System Restore has C:\ (Missing)?
And when I'm going to perform System Restore, they said that I don't have any copy just because I switch off the System Restore feature (odd enough, I don't recall I switch off System Restore)

It's referring to another drive named C:\ that you removed/renamed or it just can't see anymore. Hook it back up or give it back it's old name to allow it to communicate with it again.

I have a question about the Admin account in Windows Vista Home Premium.

I have NOD32 and I discovered something, and is a well know issue with vista.

When I scan a document using NOD32 it displays after the scan this:

"User does not have Administrator Privileges. The Anti Stealth-technology is working in limited mode".

So, does this basically means I don't have full Admin privileges?

    How can I solve this?

    Thanks.
