Tweaking is a 10 minute task, if you know what you are doing. If you have access to google, you are good to start.

I think this guide is great too, but I turned off TMM using the guide, but it didn't work

Even now when I start up, my lappy's screen turns on and off as before, and this slows my boot time.

    Can someone help me out????
    Thanks

It could be your graphics driver. See this for updating your graphics driver: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258626

There seems to be a LOT of confusion about the TMM tweak and what it does. The ONLY screen blackout it "fixes" is the one associated with Vista's check for an external monitor. This particular screen blackout is a very short lived one. (Which is why I always thought this "tweak" was useless, in light of the good things that TMM does. Specifically, resizing and moving off screen windows from the external monitor automatically when the external monitor is not in use. Without TMM, it is VERY easy to leave a window orphaned on the now nonexistent external monitor. And in some cases if you then kill the app associated with that window, the next time you start the app it will put it's window back on the nonexistent monitor. Ouch!)

But to my point, the TMM tweak will NOT fix any other screen blackout, like the one that occurs DURING bootup for some folks.

    I see.

I thought mine was the TMM one, beacuse it appears after the vista loading bar has disappeared but before the vista icon pops up and windows appears.

I lasts for around 10 secs during which the screen in completely off.

Not sure what else could be causing it.
I want to get rid of it as it slows boot up

I don't need it on, beacuse I never use an external monitor, but I was just wondering what could be causing the screen on mine to turn off if it isn't TMM

    hi there

This Guide is excellent, especially for an enthusiastic but new tweaker like myself - many thanks indeed !! - and I have been implementing some of the suggestions.

I am however having trouble with No 3 "Cut Shut Down in Half !!"

When I click on Control there is a long list but I cannot see "Wait To Kill Service Timeout"

Has it changed its name or am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks in advance for help/guidance !!

Just a quick note to say that I was finally able to make the necessary modification to the registry key.

    Thanks for this useful tweak.

Are all the tweaks that may have been discovered throughout the pages also included in the OP?

Only the safe and sensible ones. There are tons of others that have been suggested that provide gains here or there at the expense of security or stability; those have not been included. The ones in the first post are (mostly) safe enough for anybody to do. Advanced users may want to look elsewhere for more advanced and involved tweaks.

To open windows faster in Vista, right click Computer > Properties > Click Performance > Click "Adjust Visual effects" > Uncheck the first two settings in custom properties namely "Animate Controls and elements.." and "Animate windows when maximizing and minimizing...".

This tweak will open windows faster and Vista seems to be more responsive in general copy, move operations.

This guide is awesome. Thank you so much.
My machine is so much faster now.
I've also gotten into the good habits of regular maintenance, and before installing a new program, asking myself 'do I really need this' or 'is there a lighter weight alternative with a smaller footprint'. I also regularly check my services to see if any new ones have sneakily been installed to start on boot up. For example I recently installed Oracle 10 XE which tries to run at boot up, but I only want it to run when I am doing development work, not when reading my emails!
To anyone reading this, put the time in, its well worth the effort!
    :)

OK,I think I am ready to move to VSTA for my notebook. I will run VISTA Business x64 compared to XP Pro X64. Is there really an improved performance since lastyear to makit worth it for moble use? I am running older PM945 chipset w/ T7600 and 4GB (2x2G) DDR800 run as DDR667 @ 4-4-4-9 (limitedto mobo & CPU). I am instaling a nwer HDD as Seagate 7200.3, 320GB w/ 16MB cache.

Will I have issues w/ S4 Hibernate function in VISTA x64 as w/ in Server and XP Pro x64 if allowing full 4GB RAM or Do I need to configure to 3.85GB?

Only problem I have right now is that my videos and pics are scattered everywhere in my hard drive haha

I haven't changed my trial services yet, but on my office network, we have and use Symantec Enterprise x64 still on Server Ent x64. Will any of the recent Server x64 apps run on any VISTA x64 (anti virus stuff)?

RE: Link Layer Topology Discovery. How do I get this to install to an XP x64 & Server 2K3 x64 machine? I cant get my VISTA Business and Premuim X64 workstations to see my XP x64 & S2K3 X64 machines. The XP x64 S2K3 x64 rigs can see the VISTA rigs but are denied access.

Is there a work around fix for this?

I do NOT have any current running x86 (32 bit) systems on my network.

    Thankx in advance!

No need to be sarcastic about it. The thread is about tips and tweaks, your question was about a very specific networking issue unrelated to any of the discussion in this thread.

Didn't meen to have it sound like that. My origional ? was asking for anything weather it be a tip, trick tweak or legit fix. I just asked about a tip/tweak to get a VISTA pc to see a XP x64 pc in "VISTA's" network map. Again a VISTA tip and or tweak since it is pretty clear tha an officail fix is not available yet.

Again, sorry, maybe I'll look in another VISTA tips, tweaks or hacks tread.

    Thankx anywayz!

I cant remember when I ever had to actually shut down. I have always utilised S4 "Hibernate". However, on installing and such, where you need to restart, you can notice a change.

Still, that is a very specific networking question where the solution, be it a trick or official fix, ISN'T going to be applicable to the majority of users. You'll get better answers if you post your question in the networking forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=28

OK, then back to the speed up tweaks. What other tweaks or adjustments can be made to speed up entering S4 "Hibernate" times as this is more of a regular daily thing then restarting or cold boot?

I don't know of anything to specifically decrease the time your computer takes to go into hibernate other than closing down programs that are open that you don't need so that your computer has less data to save to the hard drive.

I use sleep instead of hibernate; it's faster and works well.
