This is not big issue, but it's really frustrating me. When I download/save something to desktop, Windows will find an area to save on the desktop. However, I recently noticed that Vista sometimes save the file in the very bottom of the desktop and behind the taskbar. So the file is hidden behind taskbar. From my understanding, taskbar must be on TOP of everything. See attachment so you guys can understand better.

I just saved a text file on the desktop. However, when I look at my desktop, I cannot find that file, however, when you searched it, it is in the desktop.

After I lower the taskbar I can see some part of the icon image hidden behind taskbar. This is not supposed to happen.
I have tried to do "Auto Arrange" and supposedly vista must place the icon anywhere, but behind the taskbar.
When I move my taskbar, my desktop icons are able to hide behind them -- even when i lock to taskbar. Resizing my desktop taskbar does not move the desktop icons automatically. All of my other computers automatically push the icons so they don't hide. Any idea why this happens? I cannot figure out why, if somebody can help, please let me know.

no clue how that happens right now..
but you could enable aero so you can at least see the icon
and downloads belong into the download folder.
but it's an interesting + very annoing behavior.. no clue what that's based on. -
Is your taskbar currently set to be on top of other windows? That may solve why it's hidden behind the taskbar. Not sure why it's saving it in that corner though...

It looks like your taskbar is set to double height.
Right click task bar and uncheck "lock taskbar".
Then position your cursor over the top edge so you get the double arrow and drag the height down to one row.
Edit: sorry, you already tried that. -

this all doesn't help. maybe he wants it double height (i know quite some freaks doing that. never understood why
).
and it normally is always set to top of other windows.
question is, how does the os chose, where to position a file to.
maybe install "stardock fences", as it is a desktop file arrangement tool. maybe just installing and uninstalling again fixes that bug? (or maybe you like the tool and continue to use it. like i did).
is that value stored somewhere in the registry? i think we'd need to contact someone from microsoft to check on what code and data the position exactly depends on. -

but as i said, some users like it that way. i don't think the OP made this "accidentally" (as you can't by default, in vista). -
Is the size of your desktop set to be larger than the display on your monitor?

Surely you've tried rebooting?
-
Already tried rebooting, lock taskbar, check taskbar on top of other windows etc etc... adn still didn't work.
-
is autohide on?
if you havent, check align to grid and sort ur icons -
Already done all the things that I can think of. But still it doesn't work. I probably need to wait till windows 7 released and install new thing. If anybody knows the solution, please post it here. Thanks.

REEEIIINNNSTAAALLLLL.....
Seriously though, have you tried making another account and seeing if it does the same thing? -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
you tried stardock fences once?
and yes, try another user account and see if it does the same (it shouldn't). -
Do you know when it started to do that? If so, why don't you use System Restore to restore it to a date when it was OK?
-
I had this problem just now occur after my laptop came out of a sleep state. It occurred last Friday, too. No explanation for this behavior, but I noticed through System Restore that a Windows Update was installed this morning (which didn't require a reboot, apparently). I tried to find the specifics on the update, but looking in Programs doesn't show what update was installed on 5/19. (I'm running Windows firewall, btw, so whatever update occurred isn't likely to be nefarious). I very recently rebuilt my laptop with Vista and the programs I regularly use, and I browse only a few news websites, so this isn't likely malware. Rebooting, for me, corrects the problem. Nothing else I tried would work (playing with Auto Arrange, moving the taskbar, etc.).
