I wonder if it's faster than the Level3 servers (4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2 and others). I wish this had been around when I finally gave up on OpenDNS.

My pings are faster to the Level3 DNS, but what really matters are lookups. A quick google search gave me this DNS speed test, but I have no idea how accurate or effective it is.

"A DNS server does not receive all of your traffic. The only thing the server receives is a request to get the IP of a domain name.

So if submit your credit card info to something like secure.ebay.com/blahblah.html, the only thing the DNS server is going to see is "secure.ebay.com". The DNS server will not receive the full url/address or any of the actual data/packets being sent. Those are sent to the IP that is returned by the DNS server instead. And even then, I believe most computers will cache the IP address so that it doesn't have to look it up with every single request."

DNS = DOMAIN NAME SERVER. They are the servers that translate names to IP addresses so it can find the appropriate resource. Many times that is the issue with many people's connections, their DNS is botched, the DNS cache is botched, or local DNS cache is botched.

Either way good idea to go to command prompt type " ipconfig /flushdns" (no quotes) after switching to another DNS server or if having issues connecting to a site.

Also, this speeds up page lookups which will load websites much faster. I "feel" it slightly faster, but either way, I'm going to be using Google DNS for my notebook, and maybe later beyond further testing switch to it on my desktop.

This may sound like a dumb question, but if your on a college network, could you plug this into your personal network connection settings and have this work?

I'm not Domain Joined, using Cisco Clean Access Agent, or anything silly like that. All I do is plug in my Ethernet cord into my computer.

Yes it will work, I have it enabled on both my ethernet connection and wireless on my notebook.

For people who want to install it, here is a video, though the written instructions aren't any harder. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt7FP4UrAgA

    How'd you test it?

And also, this just released yesterday and you know the HYPE around Google. I'm sure EVERYONE is probably switching to it. Also, you should try making the primary 8.8.4.4 and the alternate 8.8.8.8 since most people will most likely have 8.8.8.8 as the primary. Might be little faster. But give it time, when the HYPE ends, it will be faster than your ISP and/or OpenDNS.
