I just dropped Norton AntiVirus, and ordered NOD32 online. It will arrive in the next week or so.
My question and concern:
I downloaded the free trial of NOD32. Should I be using the internet? I need to check my email and this time I decided to post my worries here.
I'm currently only protected by the trial of NOD32. Am I safe?
Another question:
I don't know how to set up NOD32 well. I DLed it, now do I need to do anything else? Norton programed itself to run scans every day or every week. Does NOD32 do this too? If so, do I need to do anything?
Any more random help would be very appreciated.
Thanks, Dan.

You are most definitely safe. The trial is a 30 day evaluation. You have 30 days of full protection. Until then, you have to order the subscription. Its best to go through every knook and cranny of NOD32. If you have any other Qs just post them here.

I remember running across a guide for setting it up, I'll try and find it and either link to it or upload it here.
As for the evaluation edition vs. the actual product that you pay for. The only difference (I believe) is the update servers that you get your updates from. The free access servers (for evaluation edition) don't get updated as fast as the pay ones (probably a few hours delay), other than that the products are identical.
EDIT:
This is a link to the product manual from Eset (the company that makes NOD32): http://www.eset.com/download/manuals.php
And this is a link to a forum that goes thru the setup process step by step: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=37509 -
First of all, I have to say, I am greatly biased towards NOD32 (because i Like it soo much). Anyway, the reason why I believe you're safe may be well explained in the example below:
Security experts discovered a bug in IE, exploiting which allowed to start any app on your PC. A proof-of-concept javascript code was written and published on the web. Having learned about it, I deliberately wanted to try (it was expected to start calc.exe). After typing in the URL, NOD!!! warned me at about four times, saying that it is a really a dangerous site, I should not go there. Since I was adamant, I finally got to the site just to see my browser disappear and calc.exe started.
So the conclusion: NOD32 did everything in its power to prevent the havoc. And it is a good practice not to go to a site NOD tells you as being dangerousAnother thing: My subscription on my old PC (233MX) is over a year old, and there are still no signs of viruses/trojans. So, i think you're quite on the safe side even with your eval version.

Why pay when u can get it for free. wink wink
Anyways, nod32 doesn't have a good virus detection rate use kaspersky, it's both great on detection and protection. -
Where do you get that NOD doesn't have a good detection rate?? Sources? Everywhere I've seen rates it extremely high on the detection/prevention scale.

I agree with ttupa. I am not saying that Kaspersky is bad. If I recall correctly I saw quite a bunch of recent reviews ranking NOD32 as top or near top, Kaspersky wasn't too far behind.
The thing that sets NOD32 apart from most others IMO is that it is soo much lighter on resources.

NOD32 is an extremely powerful and useful anti-virus software that is quite light on memory resources as well and up-to-date as well. I am biased to it like qwester, i remember one time i had a new virus on my machine that 3 other virus scanners failed to detect (AVG, Avast, Norton) i used nod32 and it quickly detected it and fixed it and since then i have used it and have been pc-clean.

No, really. If I was to choose which soft to buy having a limited budget, NOD32 would be the first one on my list (well, it really was - the first soft I bought). It really gives value for your money, and deserves it much more than Windows -
thanks for all the info!
As great as it seems that NOD is, I wish it was slightly more user friendly.
Another question:
BigFix. Is this more of an update program, or an AV. I just got a new laptop, so I'm in the process of getting all the crap programs off it.
Should I keep it? Should I DL all the Fixlets that is recommends? -
A list of what it recommends please.
-
it mentions that everytime an update is needed, i should subscribe to fixlet sites, and then I can DL the updates.
NOD32 help please
