    Hey all,

I'm curious as to whether you guys prefer to download ALL security updates that shows up on Windows Update.

As I go through some of the descriptions associated with each update, some of the update seem irrelevant to me since its patching a program that I never use.

In that case, I'm just wondering if you guys download the update anyway?

    Thanks!

I normally don’t read descriptions or unselect security updates marked critical or urgent, but don't install application or driver updates over Windows update.

Well, if you put new tires on your car, would it matter if you put all the bolts on or just one or two?

I believe it's important to get all the security updates - but that's me.

More so important with XP then Vista. Vista seems pretty rock solid out of the box. I have yet to be hacked or get any type of bug. On XP I was whacked every night.

Avoid driver and application updates though like PhoenixFx said. God knows what Microsoft did to it.

Let the Windows Update application do the job. It's automatic! There is no need to worry about individual patches once XP SP3 and Vista SP1 gets released.

actually i leave it pretty much alone. i let the automatic update download critical files, not really the drivers and such

Whacked every night? What kind of sites do you visit or where are you located? I've had an internet connection from when the internet was born (1994 & later)and NEVER have been hacked. I've had probably only a half dozen viruses too, all that were easily remedied with a freeware anti-virus program.

If you think Vista is secure, you're kidding yourself. XP has the largest install base, hence its attraction for attack. Give it another year or so and Vista will be the hacker's delight. But stop visiting those porn and illegal download sites and you'll be fairly safe.

I don't install the software removal tool that comes out every month. The actual updates are bloated enough. Download 3 MB worth of updates, lose a 100 MB in disk space.

Never get the drivers, they're hideously out-dated.
