A friend has the above mentioned computer...
it came with Vista installed...and, as usual 1 giga of memory...therefore very slow...
after living with this for a while she decided she'd had enough...
she has installed her copy of XP...
all drivers for new OS found...except one...
no audio driver...so she asked me...
    I searched Gateway...even sent them a mail...
but the reply was..."we only support with original OS installed...
but try this page anyway"...it led to a drivers page on Gateway I had already found...
    only drivers for Vista...
the only other thing I can tell you is that the driver should be Sigmatel...
any help with this would be greatly apreciated...

    solved the problem...!!!

by uninstalling what was there and didn't work...
and installing a driver that was not supposed to be for this model...
    Conexant_Audio_6.14.10.0565.exe
    the problem has been solved...
    and now there is sound

many thanks to all who have been head scratching, trying to solve this

    OSD,
Where did you locate the driver? I have a gateway MX6436 that is a few years old and my hard drive crashed. When it was replace the audio drivers will not reinstall correctly. I emailed Gateway, they told me that since my warrenty expired I had to pay an hourly fee to talk to them.
