Hi Everyone
I have a HP dv6519tx which i've installed XP Home Edition onto and i'm looking for good DVD player software because the Vista player (HP Quickplay) wont run on XP. Any suggestions? Preferably it needs a 5.1 Surround decoder because I would like to use it on my desktop as well. At the moment I'm running everything through the preview window on DVD Shrink 3.2 and the programs i have tried all failed to work correctly.
Thanks! Notebook Review RULZ!

VLC is great, but if you're just playing DVDs, what's wrong with Windows Media Player?
-
cant go wrong with mpc (media player classic) - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm

Meh, tons of things will work depending on your style. You can go VLC, or just install K-lite and get what you want with WMP. Could get zoomplayer, or gomplayer, or wmpc. Tons of options. Try them all.

Because I dont have a decoder for it. Tried a few free ones and they were all crap.

AVS DVD Player: http://www.avsmedia.com/DVDPlayer/index.aspx

Tried AVS before and it didnt work. Tried VLC but the installer seems to have downloaded incorrectly. And Media Player... I just plain dont like Media Player. Lol. I did try it and its the only one which sorta works. But I'm quite certain it doesnt have a 5.1 Surround decoder. Can any one confirm this?

LOL
Are you really running everything through the preview window of DVD shrink Grandadmiral?
Thats hilarious!
I recommend VLC media player -
you can just install quickplay for xp
-
I certainly am! Works great, I just set up 5.1 in the preview options menu and hit full screen. Works like a charm, I even copied it to my portable hard drive took it to a friends house one night so we could watch movies on her DVD-less computer, no installation required (Apart from DAEMON Tools). DAEMON Tools and DVD Shrink are the best! Like I said, the only catch is no menus or subtitles.

i don't think vlc is good for watching dvds because it has no memory (as in it doesn't continue from where you stopped if you reinsert the dvd.
i like power dvd or media center -
Good point.
I haven't used it in awhile but I didn't like it either.
-
Ahh, full screen. I forgot about that.
Tu che! -
Except Media Center... ... (Microsoft. Egh! Lol) still requires a DVD/MPEG-2 codec. And I don't have media center on my laptop anyway. Is Power DVD free? Still waiting to test VLC, forgot to last time.
By the way, love the signature. Lol

try community combined codecs pack for wmp?

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I'll second whoever mentioned the K-Lite codec pack on the first page. Solved all my codec problems two years ago and I haven't had any since.

Just out of interest, does anyone have a recommendation of a good encoding program? I would like something that can do DVD to DivX so I dont have to cart a bag full of DVDs around when I'm going to a movie night. Tried Simple DivX and Videora (I think) and they didnt work.
