Hi all,
I need a good wiping software. To make the story short, my mom's desktop computer needs to be return and we don't want to let her private files fall into wrong hands, including XP. Does anyone have recommendation for wiping program including wipe out of XP? The desktop has also floppy drive, makes it easier for me to use.
TIA.

Active KillDisk; I've used it myself many times before and it does a very thorough job.

For all intents and purposes, isn't enough to just reformat? It's not like you have top secret national security data on there.

Thanks bc135, I will take a look at it.

Eraser 5.8 can make a boot disk that will do a 35 pass wipe of your hard drive. It's free and comes in most OS flavors. You can get it here: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/download.php
Doing the full Guttman format is overkill though if you don't think a foreign government or terrorists are planning to steal vital information from the disk. The Department of Defense settings would probably be fine. -
I've used both D-Ban and Eraser but I tend to trust D-Ban for whole harddrives. Eraser is something I'd use for individual files/partitions etc.

I was thinking of degaussing with a magnet but when i saw the computer needs to be returned, my solution is not very ideal.

Thanks all for your suggestions.
I will look into more.
