Basically, I have the set-up (recovery disks) for my acer laptop which I didn't install as it is windows in german. Acer Suppert said they couldn't send me an english version as I bought it in Switzerland (in transit).

Anyway, I am having difficulty trying to extract files from the CD. All it has is an image folder with many .GHS files within. Now, I wish to extract these files and be able to get particular add-on programs which would normally be on this laptop.

I have tried programs I downloaded off the net, but none of them have worked and cannot extract the information from these files.

If anybody could please assist me, it would be much appreciated.

    Thank You.

yes .ghs is a norton ghost file.

so that means i'll have to install norton ghost just to try and extract these files........and from what i know, it will extract them directly into the system configuration and not just as files.

so i need a program which can view the files and all me to extract them!

Norton Ghost can extract individual files out of images.

Dr-St is correct. To flesh out his remarks. NORTON Ghost Software Apps have ... basically four functions:
    1. the ability to Image a drive.
    2. the ability to create boot-able disk so the image can be addressed in DOS or their OS2-DOS like OS.
    3. the ability to look into and Extract a specific file or Files.
    4. the ability to replace or write a previously saved image.

If again …if I have followed the thread correctly- to extract a Specific file or files, you are in need of the correct version of GHOST EXPLORER { I have found not all work as well as they can and some of the older vers. are still quite usefull) and ALL the both GHO & GHS files that make up the image or partition that were saved.

With them all linked[ you can use GHOST EXPLORER to 'link' to different *.GHS files in different locations with this product]... you then can retrieve specific items you need.

If you are attempting to lay down a Previously saved image{ since this is in a different laguage... doubt it ) or partition you will need the boot tools and the complete image. Then this can set to overwrite the complete drive or partition.

    hope this helps
    Peace,
    Gm

All I need is the set-up file which is on a recovery disk for my laptop. I can't re-install the whole system because it is in german. So all I want is a hot program which came with the system called "Acer Arcade".

Which Norton Ghost do you suggest I download in an attempt to extract this file?

ps....it would have been easier just to download the "acer arcade" program, but until now, no luck in finding it.

    thanks.

i tried norton ghost version 9.0, the backup image file viewer, but this program does not recognize .ghs files, but only .gho! I don't know now whether to download the latest version 10 and hope it works, or download an earlier version.

In my experience, different versions of GHOST work with well with different duties.

6.5 is the best and most dependable image creator.
As I understand your purpose...NORTON GHOST 2003 ( the full application ) looks to be a direction you might look at.

As I recall ( and if someone else has the history better pls POST. )
Norton 3-5 were strictly DOS or os2-dos like apps. 6 had a 32 bit application.
6.5 had the best image creator. I still use this. Then they went with two versions that really bite. 7 and 7.5 Then the version you need came out. Noted above.

This has the best " GHOST EXPLORER " VERSION.
This version also has the better boot disk creator assistance as well as USB and LPT support that are integrated well with both the GUI and DOS side of things.
Then GHOST 9 came out then 9.? I am unsure now what is the
current version - now that the history is over.

This product NORTON GHOST 2003- the functionality of the ghost explorer andregardless of which version of ghost explorer you use make sure you have the COMPLETE IMAGE. This will consist of 1-*.GHO file and accompanying *.GHS files -REMINDER if you do not have all the files that makeup the needed image you will not be able to extract it partially to retrieve the needed files.
    Hope this helps.
    Peace,
    Gm

the 2003 version didn't work either.........it said that the .ghs file is a ghost span extent file. the only different file on the disk is a .HDD file. When i attempt to open this file with norton ghost, it asks for a password!!!

    I am stuck!

sounds like your painted in a corner for sure. Depending on what you have to work with ( other computers, HDDs, ETc. )

You might: A. make an image of the 'good' or better image that just lacks the needed few fles. B. Wipe the drive. C. Load the GERMAN Language image D. Extract the files and save them somewhere else. E. RE-Wipe F. Lay down the desired -yet lacking image G. retrieve the previously saved needed files. H. insert files.

Whew!!! Looks like a Whip. The only other direction may be finding a password ( try the basic ones: 'Administrator', 'password', blank, the product or manufacturer name, or Version names or numbers, Etc... ) or some-sort of hack. I have little experience in this area.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
    Peace,
    Gm
