Need a new password manager

Been using Dashlane as my password manager for the last two years, but the quality of the desktop client, web browser extension, and mobile app has been going downhill over the last several months. Their tech support is all but worthless so despite having a year left on my plan, I'm about ready to make the switch. There are a ton of options out there. I used 1Password in my Mac days, but it was pretty bad on Windows. I wasn't super crazy about Lastpass either, but again, maybe it's gotten better. I need a service that supports sync across desktop and mobile devices and that can import data from Dashlane. Support for storing credit card info is a plus. The one that has me most intrigued is Bitwarden as it's affordable and isn't bogged down with unnecessary junk like Dashlane with its worthless VPN. I'm open to other suggestions.

 

LastPass FTW. Nothing even comes close!

 

I switched recently from Lastpass to Bitwarden and like it. There was always something about Lastpass that never felt right with me, still not sure what it is. I like Bitwarden's sparse non fancy interface and the fact that it is open source. Lastpass does have some nice features though like launching with auto-login, and family request of access in the event of death. With Bitwarden you need to be on the site "login page" for it to autofill. It also supports fingerprint login on mobile devices and data import from other password managers. I would still recommend Lastpass for non-techie parents, etc. as they can just click on the the "launch" and it will take them there and auto-login.

 

I use Keepass.

 

I would say give KeePass a check. This software can be installed on one computer and another same version for a USB portable stick that you can sync when you update one to the other to keep all your logins the same. I think this is the best version to use as I used it since 1.x and it has worked well for me without issues. I've talked about how a Browser Addon password keeper or Server site to keep your password is a poor choice to secure your logins as you have no control whom can see and access those files on their server and with the history of LastPass being hacked I would put them on the list of again being hacked in the future of not how but a matter of time before another hacker gets past their security through the Browser. With KeepPass you can use it to open on which Browser you want to launch it from. That is also another Factor I would stay with Keepass your not limited to having to install on multiple Addon Browser to just use it. To me anything from a site or Browser Addon wanting to save my password to their Site that is a "RED FLAG" for hackers and stay clear of using their software for that purpose. You already give sites enough information on you why would you " GIVE" them your " HOUSE KEY". As yourself that and you will know the answer. Also Keepass you can make a "Master Password" that must be entered before access your logins-so you have another layer to access it-but don't forget that password should you make one otherwise your likely up the creek for doing that.

1. Locally installed
2. USB portable - sync with the local file to update changes
3. Create Master Password - must be entered before full access to logins
4. Open Source, Updated Regularly, Forum support

Wow, saved me a lot of explaining on why this is one I like.

There is also a need to explain keeping what sites you visit to a minimum on your phone. This is primarily so you don't save the password there and do like was mentioned with abrowser plug in.

Also, remember the senate just passed the renewal of the patriot act, but with the added provision that intelligence agencies can get your browser history without a warrant. You keep passwords in a mobile browser, it's giving your data away. Just to give a privacy perspective.

KeePass has an app for Android phones. I don't think it is an official KeePass but is a port. Wouldn't that suffice?

Yeah. I switched from LP to Bitwarden and switched to LP within 2 days since Bitwarden didn't have push notification based 2FA and had to type it. I got frustrated when I was using 3 different laptops at the same time wherein typing Authenticator codes became tiresome!

 

There is a version for Android that works I think it was Androidkeepass or something like that and it works with KeePass file. But if your on computer a USB and installed Keepass you can sync the changes to keep it working. Smartphone is only good if your using the Browser to launch it. Otherwise use the USB/Desktop install to access is faster logins. One has to read how to properly use Keepass from USB/Desktop install to use it correctly.

 

Keepass only requires a Master Password if you set it to access the file. 2FA is only good as it is implemented from their side otherwise it's worthless and if you get locked out using 2FA that makes this worthless as well.

 

2FA w/o backup devices is a PAIN. I nearly misplaced my phone and I was locked out of my account just twice. So, I have 2 or 3 more devices as backup so that I am not locked out.

 

I have already had to delete one of my account online because they refused to help with my locked and even when I told them how do I do 2FA when my phone ask for it and the phone was where the app was nor could I go online because it keeps asking for the 2FA but I had no access to the 2FA to even get started.
