I need help convincing my dad to let me get a lappy with Windows 7 (Home) on it. I don't know if any of you remember the old Christmas Carol movie. But this guy in it says, "I'll adhere to the old ways, and die out with them if needs must." After hearing those words my dad has been an old-school Nazi and won't let me get any new piece of technology without a good argument.

Now, enough of my sob story. I need some good points on why I should get the new Windows OS. Help, please.

If you want to convince him that Win 7 is an improvement on XP, you can tell him that it is much, much better in security. There are other reasons -- better support for recent hardware, etc. You can find those using Google.

As for convincing him that Win 7 is an improvement on Vista, you're out of luck with me -- I like Vista better, so count yourself lucky that your dad doesn't ask me directly :D

Getting a part time job always worked for me . My father provided the essentials , if I wanted more I was free to work and make the money to buy what I wanted .

Do you need a new machine, though? If you need a new machine, get one with Windows 7. If your current machine is fine, you just need to convince him to get the Win7 upgrade disc.

It sounds like you're trying to use Win7 as a reason to get a new machine to replace a perfectly good one you already have. It's not.

Let you get, as in, he pays for it? or let you get it in that you pay for it yourself?

Hehe, this has happened before. People calling me a spoiled brat because I'm trying to get my dad to buy it for me. I'm buying the M11x with my money, all by myself, but I need to ask my dad for permission. No worries, I'm not mad. The thing is he told me, "Windows 7? Hell no... why would you want Windows 7?!"

    [EDIT]

Btw. The PC I'm dominating the gaming world with, right now is using:

    • 512 MB RAM
    • 80 GB 5400 RPM HDD
    • Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Chipset
    • Intel Pentium 4 (3.00GHz) CPU

Well, that's a relief. Seriously, I've had my share of spoiled brats, including an ex-girlfriend... you really DON'T want that kind of person as your partner. Even if you're just 18, like I was.

    (end useless personal rant)

As for your M11x, good choice of laptop. Just tell your father that Windows 7 is the default OS for that laptop and that with Windows Vista some things will not work well and it will represent time lost installing drivers, solving incompatibilities, etc. Not 100% true, but not a lie either...

tell dady that XP is no longer support by Microsoft, and it has security issue that displays XXX ads (purposely put a few there shouldn't be hard). tell him that it is essential for you to upgrade to Win7 so that no XXX ads would pop out when you are doing your home works or chating to your girl friend on MSN.

Tell your Dad that Windows 7 is the only OS that Microsoft is supporting going forward, and all the companies that make computer hardware will only be writing drivers for it and not XP. On top of that, 7 has a much better security model than any version of Windows before it, so you'll be safer from viruses and spyware and such. Vista is essentially the same as 7, so you may as well get 7 which is the official new OS if you're going to get something other than XP because 7 will be supported longer than Vista, and XP is out of support now. Vista is the new Windows ME... stopgap that just doesn't really work right.

I didn't mean to imply that you were spoiled... it's just the way you worded it that it sounded like you were trying to use Windows 7 as a reason to get a new machine, which it isn't. Having a 512MB Pentium 4 with an i915 is a reason to get a new machine ;)

Can you find this machine with Win 7 pre-installed on it? In which case, if your dad has no objection to you spending money that you earned on that machine, the question regarding the OS is a moot point. As someone mentioned earlier, you could very truthfully say that the machine you are buying comes with Win 7 and there is no point in downgrading to an older OS.

But why is your dad so interested in the OS that you use? I can understand him being concerned about you spending your cash on a new machine (which he may consider as being - from his point of view - unnecessary). His concern about the OS, however, is intriguing!!!

Maybe his Dad just wants him to think about things, and be able to justify decisions? I'm gonna make my son do that, as soon as he starts talking ;)

Is it possible that your dad thinks you want Windows 7 for your current laptop and that it's not clear that you want a new laptop which happens to include Windows 7?

So you're going to buy a laptop with your own money, and your dad is opposed because it comes pre-loaded with Windows 7? :/ Is he aware that it's been out since last year and it's the standard operating system on any new laptop?

Tell him that windows 7 will save you money. Downgrading will cost more. Since you're not spoiled, you'd like to save more money instead of wasting on useless OS downgrades.

My dad would gladly dish out $100 for Windows XP. He knows full well that all--apart from Eurocom and Sager--laptops come pre-loaded with Windows 7. The M17x could cost $1 and because it's tainted with Windows 7 he'd still say, "I won't go against principal."

Hmmm...strange! But if this is the case, then you have a problem. Thankfully, in recent times I don't have to justify any of my actions to anyone. But when I was much younger and I did have to do so, it was primarily based on the "need" of the thing I wanted to invest in. But then again the need for justification was - and this is only my opinion - reasonable - like why do you need a new computer, won't your existing one do...etc.? But once the decision was made that I could go in for a new computer, the details were left up to me to decide with the caveat that if anything went wrong with it (not technically or something like that), then I would have to deal with it. I remember I also had to show that I had done my research, which included model comparisions, costs, how it would aid my schoolwork and other such stuff.

But in your case, perhaps your dad needs to look deeper into Windows iterations post XP. Maybe you can develop a chart of sorts that does a SWOT analysis between XP, Vista and Win 7? Just a thought!

XP is going out of support in 2 months. As in, no new patches, no security updates. It is 10 years old, and the state of technology has progressed significantly since then, making Windows 7 more efficient as well as more secure. XP also only supports DX9, so any DX10 and later games will not play. There is no "principle" for sticking with XP other than not liking change.

XP extended support ends 2014-04-08, not in two months. If his dad is that up on XP, he'll know this.

Are you kidding? It appears that your dad knows what laptops don't come with a OS pre-installed, but he doesn't know about Windows 7 and XP's end of life. Tell your dad that he is ten years behind in the tech world.
