Here is the problem I have a mess of every media file type imaginable, videos, music, and pic’s. Some music is a higher bit-rate (or quality) than others of the same song and the same is true of just about everything else. Plus of course the file names are different. I googled “deleting duplicate files software” and it seems that every program alive has written a program for it. So I need advice which program works well enough for a “recommend.”

In a perfect world I would like it to go through the hard drives and delete (to the recycling bin) the lowest quality media file. Then I can inspect for accuracy. Please any help would be awesome.

Programs you like and recommend or that are bad and/or may have deleted your whole library. Help please!!!

    OS: Vista Buss.

    For pictures, duplicate detector
    http://www.keronsoft.com/dupdetector.html

You tell DD what directories to look at and it will build a duplicate list and then show you both images with file information (dimensions, size in KB).

It finds images in different folders and compares them not by name, but by the actual image. You set the accuracy of duplication (is the picture 100 percent the same or 98 percent the same). If you take five family pictures of people sitting in front of the fireplace or something, set it to 100 percent or it will pick up very similar pictures at the default settings).

As for music, I've always found good old explorer to be sufficient, assuming the entire artist's music is in the same directory.

Turn on the bit rate column, and reorganize the columns with FILE NAME, FILE SIZE and BIT RATE next to each other. Alternate between a sort order of bit rate and file name and you can get through a folder fairly quck.
