I have a nearly 4 year old m5500. I am trying to re-install XP {USB ports and Standby are failing to work}. So I am trying to re-install XP and start over. If the problems continue, then I think it must be a hardware problem.

When I try to do the re-install, the computer shuts down on it's own. It seems to shut down at different times during the setup process {always after loading but before I can hit the ESC button that I suspect starts the re-install}.

Does this activity confirm that it's likely a hardware problem or is it some type of human error that I am not seeing?

    Thank You
    Steve

4 years old notebook - I recommend cleaning up the vents and heatsink good and applying new thermal paste first. A memtest would not hurt either. Shutdown can be from heat, bad ram ...
