Alright here's the deal my Gigabyte mobo uses the ICH9 Southbridge controller. I went to Intel's website and downloaded what I believe were to be the ICH9 drivers. When I went to unpack the Intel Storage Matrix it says:

"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software. Setup will exit."

Here's the link to the ISM I downloaded from Intel. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

So what am I doing wrong or is it i'm using the wrong drivers?

What do you mean, did you download the INFO zip and extract it, in the Vista folder you will find the ICH9 SATA Drivers

EDIT : Is this a Desktop motherboard? , Do Gigabyte make Notebook Motherboards.

Yeah I did and it updated my Chipset drivers, that's what it's for. The real issue i'm having is that I can't install my ICH9/ACHI driver. I'm currently running in compatibility mode instead of ACHI.

Try manually loading the driver through your device manager, that should work

That's what I wanted to do but I can't find ICH9 drivers unpacked, I have ICH8 drivers but I need xxx9. The first link I provided was in an executable form and aborts when it says I don't meet the system req. It's weird because when I go to device mgr it even shows the Southbridge ICH9 controller running in ATA mode, channels 1 and 2.

Have you tried Manually updating the IDE HDD controller in Device manager to SATA , just select update driver and point to where you extracted the info files, Vista directory and ich9ahci.inf file.

The reboot your notebook and enable AHCI in the BIOS.

It is better to install the AHCI drivers when you install Xp , just press F6 when you are asked if you want to install additional drivers, you can put the AHCI files on a usb memory stick.

Thanks Tinder, I tried all of the above and it still doesn't work. Btw this is on my desktop. The OS (Vista Premium 32) did not update the driver because it already has ICH9 running in ATA mode.

I copied all the ICH9/ACHI files to my USB flash drive and it did not list any of the ICH9/ACHI drivers, weird.

Ah i see....i thought you needed it for one of the laptops in your sig. If that's the case go to Dell and they provide just the drivers (8.8 version) and there you'll find the iastor.sys file. For desktops i'd have no idea really :( From Intel i've only been able to get the whole installer including the application so no idea how to get the right file from it
