Hello everyone,
I recently ordered a dell.xps 17 it s due the day after.
Now before It came..i just wanted find the diff possible ways to keep its performance at best..
1, Partition
Looks like this is the first thing everyone does.
But recently I heard its better not to partition
I have a 750gb x7200rpm hard disk
What should I do?
Should I leave it as such? Or partition it?
If so how many partitions..
(i was thinking about 2 one 100gb for c and the rest for everyrhing else)
2, installing programs (if I ve a min of 2 partitions)
Should I install all my programs in c, or just the ones that are important like ms office?
Or shud I keep all those in the other partition?
3, games
This is an important part![]()
Now most my fnds are installing their games in non c partitions..
Is that good?

Eh...please help...i depend very much on u guys...

Take a long read through that, the same general principles will apply. -
Thanx man,
That was an informative piece....
But what I found confusing is the author says 4 diff partitions all together
While a comment below says only 2 is the best...baffled on which one to take up..
Besides I didnt catch what he thought about installing apps...like shud I install it in c or precash area (the first partition) if I install games in there (64gb) it would get overloaded way too soon.. -
To sum up what is said in the post:
Partition 1: 100MB Master Boot Record (created during installation of windows)
Partition 2 T: For the swap file as well as the downloads folder since windows uses the swap file when downloading something before sending it to the downloads folder.
Partition 3 C: OS, this one doesn't really needs explaining
Partition 4 D: All your programs, Data etc.
Partition 5 E: Optional, tiller uses it for a backup of his most important programs.
The expensive, but easy solution is to get a SSD for the OS + a few programs and use the other drive for the programs and DATA. -

A maybe more easy approach can be found in here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...rades/608752-hdd-partitioning-help-500gb.html size does not matter

Hi...
So what I understood after reading (a looooot, of which I could not comprehend half )
is its best to make 3 additional partitions
(PLS CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG)
1,temporary, (for downloads cache, etc) (which is also for swap files, a term I found hard to comprehend)
2,for OS
3,for Data files (where I shud be installing games..
Could some one please tell me how to make the first partition in a little more easier way..the ones that I found here literally caused smoke to come out of my ears..(sorry fer being such a newb...but I guess thats the first step of improvement) -
You could use a tool like gparted live that you can burn from a cd and boot from the CD to make the partitions.
Or you could partition your HDD before reinstalling windows. If your windows partition is small enough, you can shrink it right away using window's disk management tool. Otherwise, uninstall stuff until your partition is small enough. After that, create all the necessary partitions and only then reinstall windows. Right click on computer and choose manage and choose disk management from there. There are videos on youtube explaining on how to do that.
The swap file also called the page file is a file that windows will use to store data that usually goes in the RAM should you run out of RAM. -
I normally use EASEUS partition manager...no complaints here...
And I was planning to do this on my brand new system...do I still ve to reinstall the whole thing?
How do I get the swap stuff away from c?
I tried you tube..but the only thing I got there is...'how to use partition software on ur HDD!'
Since I already know that...and what I do want to know is...the size and number of partitions ..youtube wasnt exactly useful.. -

Speedyr16, you want the most noticeable improvement...get a SSD.
-
Plus I ve an empty slot reserved just for an ssd!
I will get him as soon as my pocket fills up again..
But till then... -
I managed to stuff a Windows 7 install with all my programs into a 40GB partition out of a 750GB drive, the rest of the drive is personal data (music, pictures... downloads folder).
Could always wait for Black Friday and see what SSD goes up for sale too. -
But since there is time till then...i guess its fine.. -
Eh okay..ne one in simple language pls..how to make the swap partition?
Also pls tell me how to move the already installed programs to the 'programs' partition.. -
Eh..pls u guys...how do I transfer my downloads and all those stuff...to first partition? what all do I've to move to the first partition to get better performance..
-
sorry this would def be the last time i'd try to get anyone to look into this matter...i would really appreciate it a lot if you could help since i dont ve any other proper source for this...

Well after looking through for real long I came across this
answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/win7-how-do-i-move-user-folder-to-a-different/565f16a5-e5ed-43c9-8422-4f56aebb296e
This should explain how to do it..hope it turns useful...uptil I saw this I was planning on 2 partitions 1,164 GB for OS, swap, everything, and 2, the rest (excluding the primary 100mb, and recovery, 14 gigs)
Need help with better performance
