Every time I shut the lid on my laptop (Dell Vostro 1500 with Windows XP) it says it is preparing to hibernate. When I open the lid, it gives me the following error message.

"System Hibernation failed. The device driver for the 'RIM virtual serial port v2 (COM4)' device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

What can I do to to resolve this?

Have you checked in the device manager to see if there's a device in there that corresponds to what the error message is telling you? If so, does it have a yellow exclamation point next to it in the list of devices?

Also, are you following the proper procedure when disconnecting your RIM device from your computer?

Review and see if you have an option NOT to allow the comp to turn off anything that related to your RIM to save power; if yes, set it to YES (allowed)

    cheers ...

^^Just to expand on this, Windows has the ability to turn off certain devices for battery power saving, after a preset time of non-activity. These devices relate to NIC, Wireless, USB controller, COM ports etc ... If you have any external devices that use these ports, it needs to be checked if the connected devices are causing the system from turning the ports off - a process that happens often - when system entering hibernation, standby and/or shutdown.

    cheers ...
