Hi to all. I stumbled across these forums recently while in the process of purchasing a notebook and they have been a trendemous source of information. Really, you guys know more than most of the customer support techs for some of these manufacturers (Dell comes to mind).
So enough with the patronizing. Here's my issue: I recently flashed an incorrect firmware onto my SONY DVD drive when trying to fix a certain media reading problem. Long behold, my drive became funky (LED light turned orange) but luckily it still plays and burns. As of now, the only problem I know is that it cannot play sound on DVDs but runs the picture fine.
I googled for the original firmware (USD1) and came up comepletely empty. Even ran across a few threads with others having similar problems (I'm reaching out to them as well). Apparently, the kingpin that is Dell has no downloads available on their mighty website to amend this problem, and to make matters worse, SONY also doesn't have the specific firmware available for download.
My only real option at this point are you 1705E owners out there who haven't flashed your drives (like STUPID me). If anyone with this specific drive model:
SONY DW-Q58A 8X Slim DVD+/-RW Drive
can make a BACKUP .bin file copy of the firmware and send it to me, I will be highly appreciative and in your debt. My e-mail is [removed]. Or if you have any suggestions as to where I can find this rare firmware, that would be great too. For the record it's not on ANY of the popular firmware sites like rpc1.org and dhc014, just to name a few. Any information that can help me will be awesome. Thanx again.

Welcome to the forums,
I honestly do not know a solution on this. My suggestion would be to uninstall your driver in the device manager, turn the laptop off, then remove the CD/DVD drive. Turn the laptop back on, and then return the drive to the laptop.
This might cause the laptop to detect it as new hardware, and your drive should detect the right driver. From my experience, if the driver isn't on dell's website, then normally it uses a MS driver. That's why I'm hoping is the case with your laptop.

You might want to post this over at CDFreaks where they are a lot more posts on firmware flashes and optical drives in general.

Hey all. Finally got my hands on the necessary firmware and everything's back to normal. The file in question was posted on a Dell forum but now that link has expired. So if anyone with a Sony DW-Q58A DVD+/- RW drive happens to misflash and needs the original firmware, drop a line to my user name and I'll be more than happen to send it to you.
Thanks again. -
