Based upon a few threads here, I purchased a license of RegistryFix but I don't believe it's reliable. And I don't like the way Diskeeper Pro works under Vista either. Anyone have any tips? :)

auslogics.com (defrag and registry defrag) - free
forget about the registry fix, just use cCleaner and its check for issues options

and they all work under xp and vista

    cheers ...

there are a bunch of free registry editors...I can't remember them off the top of my head...regcleaner? check out http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html

As for defrag,...there's auslogics as mentioned above.

Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier is good
Raxco PerfectDisk is another well-known one that uses a slightly different philosophy than diskeeper
    O&O Defrag is a third.

Not sure what you mean by Diskeeper under Vista...it's not really much different from how it works in XP...

I agree with both products. I always used the Windows defrag until I heard about auslogic on this forum. Difference between night and day. And of course, crap cleaner is an excellent product. ;)

Well, unfortunately I usually install both Diskeeper and RegistryFix together and both times I lost my Bluetooth driver, and in the last instance, some key .dll files.

Can't say for sure which program did it, but I used Diskeeper on XP with PC Tools Registry Mechanic and never had any problems. With Vista things changed. For one, Diskeeper is far slower and leaves a lot more files fragmented.

So, all of you have used above products with Vista with no problems? Don't want to belabor the point but don't need another damaged system right now.

I've never used RegistryFix, so I couldn't say, but I've certainly never had any problems with Diskeeper. In theory, all Diskeeper does is move stuff around...it shouldn't be deleting anything.

As for slower, Diskeeper is supposed to be fully automated, so it's pretty hard to tell how fast or slow it takes unless you keep checking nonstop. However, it only defragments below a certain CPU usage % though, maybe it's not defragging as often if there's more stuff running in the background w/ Vista?

If you like to manually defragment your files all at once, take a look at PerfectDisk.

About the reg fix, I agree with qhn - CCleaner is probably all you need. However, I have to admit that on occasion, I use RegSeeker. It's free and works well, but I use it only sparingly.

I use Diskeeper manually, taelrak. Rarely does it take more than a couple of minutes to do its job. It's a fast program and works well.

What about Advanced Window Care product--free and does a number of things all at once--works well for me.

Do they really make that much of a difference?

I may look at both the Auslogic utilities an CCleaner...no chance of me botching up my machine using these things is there?

    currently using:
. xp: auslogics disk and register defrag, cCleaner
. vista: auslogics disk defrag, cCleaner - i m just concerned with vista registry structure, and still not comfortable with vista registry "automatic" utilities, manual is for me better at the moment.
. null problemo (so far anyway)

    cheers ...

Cheers guys, I actually downloaded and ran the "Advanced Windowscare Personal" app from IObit (suggested by another poster). Seems nice and simple (like me :) ). Just restarted my machine after using it and everything seems ok.

I'll stick with the IObit program for now...they also do a free "SmartDefrag" program which I'll try out later...all their stuff claims to be Vista compatible...I'll report back on it later.

I've downloaded Advanced Windows Care also, several months ago. I haven't had the nerve to try it yet, though. I am addicted to downloading stuff, then I lose my nerve and don't install them.

LOL, I've got a few Progs that I've never installed...I don't really like tampering with PC's as I'm a bit clueless about 'em.

That IObit prog is nice and easy to use though.

You will be scared to push the FIX button after Advance Window Care comes up with about 1000+ fixes :) but its all good--I run it once a month and never any problems on my XP and Vista machines

I didn't really like AusLogic when I tried it... but CCleaner is good.

    Try this.

Very effective. Very efficient. Though you do have to pay for it if you want the full version.

But I'm pretty sure we are all internet-savvy people so of course we'll pay for it.

    :D

    Search around. ;)

What didn't you like about Auslogics? It's fast as lightning compared to Windows defrag. Yes, and get off the computer and get your room cleaned!

But yeah, I didn't really like it last time I tried it... like 3 months ago on XP.

I've tried both Auslogics and O&O. I compared them to Windows XP and Vista defrag which is Diskeeper Lite. O&O takes too much resource and only cleaned up 1.5% fragmentation left over by Windows Diskeeper. Auslogic was about the same without the resources that O&O requires.

For Vista i've decided to stay with the built in windows defrag.

OK, so here's a somewhat scientific recap of your favorite defragging and registry tools, in order of mentions (number after each product name). I did not separate them by function, because some are multi-functional.

    1. Auslogics Disk Defrag 8
    2. CC Cleaner 7
    3. Advanced WindowsCare Personal 3
    4. Raxco Software PerfectDisk 2
    5. Diskeeper 2
    6. PC Tools Registry Mechanic 1
    7. RegSeeker 1

    Just a quick update,

I've been using "Advanced Windows Care Personal" and "Smart Defrag" from IOBit for last few days, both are really nice, stable utilities, and they are not slowing down my machine or conflicting with any other programs...both also seem to do what they claim, so I'm a happy camper.

Also looking forward to their "Spyware Defender" utility that is due out in a few months.

Anyways, sorry to sound like a shill for this company, but I like their stuff...and it's free, which is always good...right? :)

advanced windows care is a good overall product, but personally i was (and still am) weary about its system optimization option - kept asking to tweak IOPageLock registry entry just to mention. Not quite sure about that under xp (sp2)

    cheers ...
