i have no idea about these, i want one that does its job without being a system resource hog
ive heard about trend micro pc-cillin, zone alarm, norton, etc
which is a good buy for the money for firewall, antivirus, antispyware etc

How about Zone Alarm, AVG and Adaware - they're all free. There are many more to see at Download.com or Snapfiles.com. Also, this question has been asked lots of times; do a forums search and you'll find many threads on the topic. I believe there are two active polls concerning Nod and Kaspersky which may be of interest to you.

I suggest avast! antivirus, home edition is free. AdAware is free and good but it's not an antivirus, it's a spyware detector, and it doesn't do real-time protection. I've heard good stuff about AVG.
I certainly recommend you do NOT buy a paid product, considering the high quality of the free products above mentioned. I've noticed that most paid ones are obtrusive and slow down your system (e.g. Norton, McAfee) -

I'm not sure of a free firewall that works in Vista, if that is your OS. I use Avast anti-virus and Spyblaster, Spybot, and and Ad-aware for spyware and the Windows firewall for, well, firewall protection.
I don't see the need to buy one, but if I were to purchase a package, it would be Norton Internet Security 2007. I used the trial edition on my new HP and really liked it. PC Mag gave it the Editor's Choice rating.

i am using norton 360. quite good, fast, doesn't take much resources (less than 12MB), and it's an all-in-one (firewall, av, anti-spy, cleaner, anti-spam). i'm quite surprised on the evolution that norton got from 2006 (slow) to this new version. works perfectly on vista and doesn't slow down at all.
I used:
NOD32: and missed a lot of spyware (NOD is only an AV), so means you need extra security software.
kaspersky: good, but makes my laptop slower, plus was a period that was keep crashing the applications (never understood why, neither the people of kaspersky did).
McAfee Enterprise: very good, but slow down a bit the computer on big files
Symantec Enterprise: good too but less than McAfee.
ZoneAlarm: doesn't work for me, i'm a developer and ZA has a bug (4 years now) that always block cookies and everything comes from localhost, so i can't test my websites. Plus slow down the laptop quite a lot.
Now i stick with 360 that is just perfect and doesn't need extra software for protection. -
i use norton 360 and i am happy with it.really very light on system resources.

Norton Internet Security 2007. Very light on resources. And does not slowing down the system at all.
If you plan to use Norton, choose their 2007 release. It is night and day compare to their 2006s. -
Zonealarm is way better than Norton (or least compared to the 2005 version I last used). It uses the ZA firewall, which is excellent and the kaspersky anti-virus engine. I've tried Norton 360 for a while, but it's too "dumbed down" and doesn't offer and same configurations as other internet security software

Yep, I use NIS 2007, great suite IMO...no resource hogging or slowness.
Unicron -
Norton Internet Security 2007 here also. Uses very little resources and is not a system hog. As stated before, it's BIG difference then their last versions. I say Symantec got it right this time.

Kerio as a firewall works very nicely for me, totally customizable and I get to permit or deny things from happening.
Need to buy a Internet Security software...but which is the good one now?
