I have been backing up my DVD's to my HDD for my new HTPC, it runs smooth and fast with DIVX & AutoGK but I read up on x264 and now its the "new divx" and I have to say it really is!
Problem, no easy to use programs like AutoGK, MeGui is not working right for me and is quite advance to get what I want. FairuseWizard is not free unless you want 700mb only rips, other programs did not offer what I wanted.
But now I found the perfect one I had it all along. Nero Recode does AAC & x264 (its own version of it, witch is supposed to be better than standard x264 in a way)
I used this guide, I really liked it: http://www.biline.ca/recode.htm
lets me do bitrate control, resolution, target size. Its perfect and it loads the cpu really well but does not peg it 100% constantly like megui did.
Well problem I just got done ripping Harry Potter and while the video is absolutly great and blows my larger size DIVX file away in quality, the sound has a bad "HUM" to it, almost like one of those 30hz bass sign wave test files or something. My sub woofer picks it up and shakes the house.
I tried encoding it again just a small portion of the film and same effect. I have no idea whats wrong. It could be the encoding itself that is messed up, or maybe just a codec is not working right with playback. I tried a few different programs but of course they all use the same codecs.
Anybody have a clue?
Edit: Well nevermind I figured the problem out. Its the codecs for sure. I tried using quicktime since it uses its own codecs and it played the audio perfectly. No hum at all.
But... Instead I get horrible white artifacts in the video that destroy the film instead![]()
Cant win for lose on this one... and I want these to play in windows media center when all is said and done so that may be even harder to do. I may have to stick with divx just for compatibility sake.
edit2: gah now its playing fine in quicktime... well time to see if WMC works.
edit3: Well figured it out, if I turn off the AC3 codec support in FFDSHOW it will use the other AC3 codec and it works. Plays fine video & audio in my players like media player classic.
Volume a bit low but nothing wrong with it. But problem not solved. Windows Media Center will now not play the file at all with that part of the codec off. Reason is because all the players can use the 32bit codecs in the system but since I have 64bit Vista WMC ONLY uses x64 codecs... I figured that one out the other day trying to figure out why half my movies would not play.
So guess I need to wait for a new improved x64 FFDShow

AVI DeMux also does AAC & x264, although I think it uses FFDShow to encode. It's free, and has a lot of other useful features and filters...
