Nervous? KB940510

I have a legit copy of Vista and I am. This showed up in Windows Update this AM. I have it set to notify me and let me choose when to download and install. I believe I'll let some others be the early adopters on this one ....

 

Wouldn't touch that update with a ten-foot pole until MS forces it. I agree, let the early adopters have the fun

It's just another security measure to prevent Vista pirates. If you're legit, you have nothing to worry about. It sounds pretty similar to WGA, except more specifically targeted.

 

Stickin' with XP Pro for the time being.

Well, you should be. I recall last summer they had a bit of a spectacle when a whole bunch of legit Vista owners got called pirates by the WGA. It got sorted out, but obviously it didn't make anyone too thrilled with Microsoft.

I'm interested to see what comes of this. They said it wouldn't affect copies already installed - rather it would work to prevent Vista SP1 install discs from installing to computers without Vista (though I think with SP1 it allows install, just has lots of nag screens). If it actually proves to work as well as it's possible to, we might see a pirate run for Vista SP Zero (though I suppose they could just copy the disk, too ). But I'm not sure how effective this will be. Guess we'll find out.

 

Yeah, me too. I'm very weary of WGA and the likes of it. Ever since a bunch of "pirates" got caught some time ago...

I have a system restore point so i'll go ahead and update.

 

System restore creates a new restore point before installing new updates

 

one good thing to have genuine windows. you dont have to worry about it everytime MS pulls out one of these updates randomly

 

If the consensus is that this Microsoft WGA update does not create widespread false invalidations of legitimate copies of Windows ( again), I will probably attempt it after a couple more days have passed.

And I will take a full backup before the attempt to install it, too

 

I installed it.. it is fine. It is an non-issue.

 

For you guys to know, as others have said, it's fine. Vista hasn't told me that i'm a pirate, and everything is working fine.

Well, atleast microsoft is honest about what they're updating.
Watch, they'll probably make it a requirement for future updates.

I have incrementally bootstrapped changes to reduce risk, minimize the extent of changes, and simplify migrations many times over my career. If Microsoft is doing this (correctly) kudos to them.

 

Have most of the updates installed on Vista Ultimate but this one does not show up on my system..

 

I think it depends on your system because my desktop pc showed this updated yesterday but my laptop has only showed it since today's evening.

What's the point ? Why would pirates install it in the first place?!

 

Windows needs to do something like MMORPGs do, silent updates that the user isn't aware of. I mean, certain websites that I've visited have lists of updates not to install if your using a pirated copy of Vista. Anyways installed and no problems.

 

Well it still not there no big deal all other updates show up...

 

It showed up on 2 machines I have at home (1 with Vista Business, 1 with Home Premium) but not on my Vista Business machine at work

 

Microsoft HAS done this, gotten caught, and as a result a LOT of IT departments no longer trust Microsoft. Yeah, the geeks never did, but now the managers are seeing the lengths Microsoft will go to, so it's bad for MS.

As for the update in the OP, the methods it's looking for are a specific driver that pretends to be your system BIOS, so unless you have something like that running, you should be fine.

Together with this update a pre-requisite for SP1 update KB 937287 showed up in windows update last night for me. I installed both of them and no probs so far.

 

I didn't get that second update, the one for SP1. Are you using a hack or what?

No hacks buddy. I just checked for updates consecutively. Everytime I checked a new update was popping up.

 

KB937287 went onto my machine on February 13th, 2008.

Apparently I installed KB940510 yesterday. I'm running a legitimate license of Vista Business but I slipstreamed SP1 into an install disc and then vLite'd the crap out of it. So apparently they're fine with modified versions of the OS so long as it's not pirated.

 

Then i guess the same goes for me too. I install updates as soon as i see them so if this has been out, i have it.

 

I have just installed the update as well, so far so good. I haven't restarted yet, even though the installer detail instructed so, it didn't force me so I didn't. I am not worried, i got my off university store, so I am 100% it is legit.

FYI: It ask for internet connection after it finished installing, I am guessing that it is "phoning home" to for good of MS, telling them that "Hey look there's another machine using our product".

KB940510 made my Acer Aspire 4520 unbootable. Only a System Restore could bring it back. I tried it twice. It seems as though the update has been fine for many, but I say beware.

 

I just installed and then restarted, no issues present yet......

 

ya it has been released again...even though i am using original but i didnt install it.

Who knows it installs a Legit Spyware or causes a crash.

I am really nervous to install it.

 

Nothing to fear, just like with WGA, which hit an awful lot of legit customers? Yeah.... Like they said, let the early adopters deal with it.

 

I downloaded it and installed it. It's a worthless update. I even applied a crack to it, and it overrides it. Stupid MS.

Anyway don't worry I have 4 legit/legal copies of Windows Vista.

 

They are just trying to irritate illegal users but this will only encourage them & remove their guilt.

 

this only targeted 2 specific cracks anyway... there are more out there and no i dont use them..

BUT i did install this on my mother in laws system which is a legit oem copy and this killed it. had to do a full repair of the bootsector and no matter the key i tried (INCLUDING HER ONE THAT CAME WITH VISTA) it would not accept it. would only allow me to boot to a screen that asked for the key. i called ms and they could not figure it out. luckily i had a backup. i retsored the backup and tried this again and the second time all went fine..

no idea what happened but i know it damaged the boot sector somehow..

i have however installed this on many machines and they were all fine. so far only the one had a issue

 

I usually wait at least 6 months before I install updates. Updates will break your computer just as fast as a virus. I personally will take my chances and test the update on a non-vital machine.

 

I installed this some 2 months back.

 

Installed this yesterday ... no problem until now.

 

Is there some new information? I am wondering why a two month old thread has been reawakened.
