I'm looking for a simple network measurement tool (that can give average speed for both down- and up-link separately) for a certain amount of time.

Netpersec is very nice, BUT it only calculates/shows the average speed for the period of time shown by the graph.

What I need more precisely is a tool which for a certain amount of time (after manual triggering) can tell me the average UP and DOWN speed of the transfer I am doing.

    Any ideas!??

I know this one but it is not what I need...

I need to measure the speed to and from a sepcific FTP server for a specific amount of time.

For example I need to upload/download a 50MB file and to measure what the average speed during the entire upload/download is.

I just installed it - it has a lot of features and lots of options.... but not the simple feature I need :)

All I need is something simple like a timer: I want to be able to press "Start" and it should start measuring the Max and mainly the Average speed of both Upload and Download (separately) until I press "Stop" - that's all I need ... :-/

I don't mind if it is a small feature of a bigger software, but preferably a small tool...

    Any further ideas?

... maybe you just need speedtest.com?

will this do or you have to measure a file you actually are using?

Hmmm no, I don't think so.

I have to download and upload a file to a specific FTP server (using an FTP client or DOS) and need a tool to measure the average speed of the transfer.

Netpersec is a great one with the only disadvantage that the average values are for a limited period of time set by the application (the visible part of the graph). As uploading 50MB through a slow internet connection takes definitely more than the period of the graph, the average speed value is inaccurate...
At the same time all other applications I've tried give average for an hour, day, week, etc. what I don't need - I only need the average for a certain data transfer or in other words - from the moment I click "Start" until I hit "Stop"....

Can't your application measure that? The one doing the actual FTP transfer?

Nope.... at least not the average values which are the most important to me...

If you know an FTP client that does that this would work too!?

I've been using Networx for everything to measure my bandwidth. It tracks your usage, has quotas, ping test, speed test and much much more. The Speed Meter will give you the time since tracking and display your Current, Average, and Maximum transfer rate along with total data transfer. It's free but they do accept donations.
