Firefox is now the up and coming browser (at least by computer magazines) with the versatility of tabbed browsing and security. However, now I see Netscape Navigator 8 which can toggle displaying a web page using the IE and Firefox formats. It can also do tabbed browsing and has built in Spyware technology. Is this the best browser out there for the masses?

Why should I continue to use Firefox if Netscape Navigator has moved up to the next level? Opinions?

You should keep using firefox. I would think firefox is still safer and even a little faster in my opinion. Firefox also has a lot of Extensions, themes, and plugins. I say stick with Firefox.

I'm defintely a FF fan, but there are some sites and functions that just don't work without IE. I'm going to have to look into the new Netscape I think.

I did the same modifications to Netscape that I did to Firefox to "speed it up".

The main extensions that I would miss would be below:
    No script
    Ad Block
    Cookie Culler
    Forecast fox

Are there extensions that exist for Netscape?

well FF supports user made plug-ins. as long as any other browser doesn't support this feature I wont even bother with it. Every time I have required some addon to FF I have found an extension for it. This is what keeps me an FF fan :D

firefox being open source it is pretty untouchable at this point.

once they are finished with 1.5 and 2.0 it should be even more fantastico!

I actually just downoad Netscape 8.0 and gave it a test drive. I personally rather like it. It has many features that make more accessible than FF. Of course it doesn't have adblock and other great extentions but it's still a pretty good browser. My one major gripe is that it lags a bit, partly because of the GUI, I think. Too fancy.
