if ur on a network there is no need to use a program. You can just share files. If you want to share them over the internet that is a different thing and i would just use a FTP or simple HTTP server for that.

When one of the steps in a file sharing 'how to' is "Share your folders", I'd be hesitant to call it a step-by-step guide.

lp33, check Windows Help, there should be enough info there to get you set up. If that's not enough, check this out (section 7 has the specifics on Folder sharing if you already have your network set up).

I didn't say it was a step by step guide. In my many years of IT experience, I have run across plenty of people who aren't well versed in running a network/workgroup and they simply didn't know they needed to share directories before they could have access to files, and didn't know that files in a user's My Documents cannot be shared. I find it very useful to include such "obvious" statements to help novices better understand how file sharing works.

I have a nice mixture of W2K, Pro and Home machines in my home workgroup, and I've successfully enabled file and print sharing using those steps. I'd say it works pretty well, wouldn't you?

It does work well, and I have a similar setup of a mix of domain-enabled machines and some in a workgroup, including the use of web folders from my home 2k3 server. Heck, I even have offline folders working to a degree. The one tricky part for a novice is keeping track of which machines have which accounts (and passwords) when dealing with workgroup. But I also got the impression that lp33 was looking for a little more detail than your link provided.

Yea see I ran the wizard, I dont think that did anything anyway, but I can see my computer from my laptop but when I click on View all computers in workgroup or something, when I click on my PC icoon I get this:

I think it is my USB network card, it always says network cable unplugged or accquiring address or something, but the internet works. Imma get a real 10/100 NIC card, I think that will do the trick.

    Thanks for the help everyone!

No, it sounds like what it says - you don't have permission. If you were having a network card problem, chances are you wouldn't have gotten as far as seeing the PC.

Assuming your Desktop PC is 'BMW', and you have a user created on BMW called 'lp33', right click on the folder you want to share and go to the Properties option and then the 'Share' tab. From there, you can grant access to the Share for the 'lp33' account using the Permissions button.

Now, when accessing it from the network, you may be prompted for an ID/PW. As the ID, enter BMW\lp33 and any password you set up for that account on BMW.

If you look at the link I posted earlier, and go to Section 7 on File Sharing, it'll walk you through setting up the share manually. Don't run the wizard, because you can't be sure what exactly it's doing. You need 3 things:
    1) Network connectivity (I think your OK here)
    2) User Account on the machine sharing files.
    3) Set up share on Folder where the files are and grant permission to user from step 2.

Let us know how it works out.

I've never tried networking yet and am thinking of trying it now. Will the above Link work with my system? See my sig. I have XP Pro OS on the Desktop and XP Home on the notebook. Any problems with that setup? I just want to access the files from my upstairs desktop when I'm downstairs on the notebook. I'm currently online with the notebook using the wireless router from the desktop.

Remember, I am a Newbie Dummy on Networking.

yes, you have everything you need to share files. you are, in fact, "networked" right now, you just can't do much with the network without changing the software options to enable the file sharing services in windows.

kegobeer's guide is a little light on details, but if you use the search function on this forum, you're liable to fall over a detailed guide to enabling file sharing.

    Straight from the horse's mouth:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040

One thing that can sometimes cause headaches is if you don't have a password set for your user account. Go to the control panel, the users and groups applet, and there should be an option to set a password. If you don't want to enter your password every time you start up, download TweakUI from microsoft ( http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe ) and in there is an option to automatically log on a certain user.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=1605260&postcount=5

    Lets get spcific
#1 You mean disable the WINDOWS FIREWALL from my "network" connection?
#2 Did that from the "Folder Options"
#3 Do you mean create identical LOGON SCREEN usres?
#4 I just want to share one folder, I went to Sharing and Security and clicked on Share This Folder, then clicked OK
#5 Both my machines running XP Pro
#6 I dont wanna share my Doc's anyway.

    Thats where I' at.

This is a COMPLETE step-by-step guide.

Beyond the steps in that guide, the only other things that could potentially keep you from accessing shared folders are either if you do not have a password for your user account, which I mentioned above, or if you have a software firewall like ZoneAlarm that is blocking file sharing.

Actually, that's part 7 of the complete guide that I linked him to 2 weeks ago on page one of this thread (and specifically told him to look at Sec. 7). Regardless, I don't know what else we can give him...that's about as detailed as you can get.

    Agreed.

@lp33 - if you don't understand those instructions, you should consider asking a friend/hiring someone to do this for you.

Please, review all of the links we've provided, and then follow the detailed instructions. Once you do that, file sharing will work.

I'll throw out one item (didn't see it mentioned, but apologize if it's a repeat) that messed up my file sharing:

In the computer description (right click My Computer | Properties | Computer Name tab) you should only have alphanumeric characters (no _ ' *, etc.). This should be on both the desktop and the NB. I also changed the computer name on each so that there were no spaces or characters. And make sure they are both in the same network group (WORKGROUP or MSHOME, usually).

I had apostrophes in the computer description on both of mine and could not file share. Changed the descriptions (per above) and rebooted. Voila! File sharing.

This is a problem with you not having permission to the share (or that the share doesn't exist).

    OK, try this:
    1) On the machine you have named BMW, go to Control Panel and create a user account called "TEST_USR"
    2) Right click the folder you want to share, go to the Sharing Tab (NOT Security). It should already be shared as "DATA" if you followed all the steps in the guides. Click the Permissions button, and make sure to give "TEST_USR" access to the share.
    3) From the other PC, open Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) and click Tools/Map Network Drive from the menu. Pick a drive letter (ie, 'S:'), type in "\\BMW\DATA", then click "Connect as Different User" and enter "BMW\TEST_USR" and the password you set up. Click OK until all the dialog boxes close.

The Share should be visible now in Explorer under the Drive letter you picked.
