I currently have an old notebook hooked up to a TV to play movies and music. I'd like a better software interface.
Current setup:
- thinkpad x31, pentium M 1.4ghz, 2mb ram, ATI mobility radeon 16mb
- win XP sp3
- connected to home network and TV
- send movies from other computers over network (copy file to x31 rather than streaming)
- play movies with VLC
- play web movies (youtube, etc.) with browser
- control from TeamViewer remote software or from keyboard
Is there better software that will work on this hardware?

what about a linux install with XBMC?

I was looking at XBMC, but thought it required (or at least strongly recommended) higher end hardware - a faster processor and higher end video card. http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?titl...nt_recommended_hardware_requirements_for_XBMC The windows version requires about the same hardware.
They recommend an ATI Radeon R700 (HD 4000) that support openGL 2.0. I have a 16mb ATI Radeon 7000, which I don't believe supports 2.0.
Otherwise, if I read correctly, it's good at organizing and playing a wide variety of media and can be controlled over a web interface.
