I am getting a new laptop and have only used XP. I am ordering it in 2 months and the last issue I have is the operating system. You hear so many horror stories about Vista. I know Win7 is just a modified Vista correct? Well the issue is what OS to get on my new laptop.

    1) XP Pro or Vista?

    2) If Vista, Home Premium or Ultimate?

    3) Or wait for Win7?

Any help will be highly apprieciated!
    Thanks

The horror stories about Vista would only be applicable when the OS just came out and drivers were not compatible with it, any problems you here now are propaganda. And propaganda is associated with Nazis. Are you a Nazi? Well then, say no to propaganda. :)
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Vista now other than its so much cooler and better than XP :D.

If you are getting the laptop in 2 months, there is a initiative that allows those Vista buyers during that time to get a copy of Windows 7 when it comes out. So your best bet is to get Vista now and upgrade to Windows 7 when that happens.

If you need to have this laptop within 2 months, then just grab Vista. If there isn't really a problem for you to wait, I would just wait for Windows 7. Don't bother with XP, it's not a viable choice anymore, it's too old.

Ok I am not a Nazi so Vista it will be. Should I get Ultimate or Just Home Premium? And how do you get the free Win 7?

I agree. If can wait two months, do it. You'll get a free ride from Vista to Windows 7 when it finally comes out.

lol. And what's all this about the Nazis and propaganda? That comparison makes no sense at all.

Hopefully this isn't going to turn into another XP vs. Vista thread.

Anyway, Xp has been an excellent OS that has served, and is serving many people very well. I still have it on one of my home computers.

With that said, If you're getting a new rig I suggest you go with Vista. It will provide a new rig with added security and has the latest support for new hardware and new programs.

If you aren't heavy into business applications I'd say go with home premium.

You may also want to consider Vista 64 bit if the manufacturer of your laptop offers it. You may as well use the most up to date OS with an up to date laptop.

W7 won't be available for retail sale for quite a while. In the meantime, If you are comfortable with a partition and dual booting, you can use W7 release candidate along side Vista.

    Enjoy your new notebook!

EDIT: Holy crap! You guys sure are fast posters!

I think Home Premium if you can't wait. There is no reason for shelling out the extra cash for Ultimate. They haven't unveiled plans for users to upgrade to Windows 7, but I'm sure OEMs will tell you how it will work fairly soon.
