Depending on what drivers you have you may not be able to install SP1 yet. Some more detailed information about your laptop would help.

just downloaded sp1...took about 40minutes...go to "control panel" and click check updates under "security" and see if it's available to you

it's not Automatic..you have to actually go to Windows update and it will do whatever critical updates that aren't installed yet.
then when you have what you need, it'll offer you the choice to install SP1.

at least that's what i had to do.

just a word of warning...do you remember when SP2 came out for XP?
there were many driver conflicts and incompatibility issues when that was released after people had installed that update. but if you just reinstall the drivers for some of your hardware/software, it works out fine.

you may need to re-install certain drivers only if you encounter any problems after the Vista SP1 install.

    good luck.

well then that is even better.
same w/ my HP i just got last week.
so go to windows update...download everything it tells you to for critical.
you may have to do this a few times.
eventually the SP1 update will show up simply install and you are all set.

best to install all your programs AFTER you've installed SP1.
if you do the Vista tweaks sticky thread in the Windows OS section after these updates..you should be good to go.

for me anyway, Vista runs almost as fast as XP does now.
like a new office chair or car, you have to adjust and tweak it to get it the way you like.

If you are going to suggest this to folks, you should also tell them that they MUST manually check their drivers against the list of ones known to cause problems with SP1. If Windows Update is not offering someone SP1, it is most likely due to one of these drivers. If they follow the suggestion to just download the standalone installer, it may have SERIOUS consequences for the user. The standalone installer does NOT check for these problematic drivers.

That may be fine for you, but it should not apply when giving advice to others here. This community is all about sharing what we know INCLUDING the risks we know. If you know there is a particular risk in something you recommend, it is your DUTY to share that know risk as well.

Actually there are cases where the standalone will not install due to detected problematic drivers.

I went ahead with the SP1 standalone even when i had a conexant problematic driver. It worked out well for me. I heard people was sucessful doing this so i gave it a try aswell.

If people really wanna go SP1 then they will need to use the standalone, the risks are small and can be undone.

There have been a couple of reports where folks used the standalone, had problems, and were unable to uninstall SP1. In one case because the machine became unusable and required a reinstall. But I realize that those are all anecdotal.

I had one of the problem audio drivers, and got SP1 standalone through MSDN prior to the new driver being available. I, like you and McGrady, was willing to take the risk, but ONLY after I imaged my C: partition. I was lucky, like you, and SP1 installed. Then latter when the updated driver became available I was able to upgrade it without issue.

That was the point I was trying to make with McGrady. If we are going to mention the standalone route for folks who are blocked in Windows Update, we owe those folks at the very least a note of caution so that they realize they need to be careful. They should make sure they have an image to fall back on just in case. That may be second nature to you and I, but there are many folks who come here with much less experience. It would be VERY VERY easy for them to think, "oh this standalone installer is perfectly safe, folks are telling me to just use it even though WU is not offering me SP1. Click. Whir. Damn. Now my machine won't boot. Wah!"

Personally, I think we all owe it to the "newbies", "less experienced" whatever you want to call them, to tell them where and how they should exercise caution. That is just part and parcel of us sharing our collective knowledge.

There have been numerous issues with people downloading SP1 standalone and having their computer take a dump on them. It is serious enough that Microsoft is offering free tech support with SP1, although I don't remember how long that is going on for. Although there have obviously been plenty of succcess stories with upgrading to SP1, for many people that don't have SP1 as an option under windows update, the best option in my opinion is to wait. I got new new lappie, installed all possible updates, and SP1 still wasn't an option. I waited a week, it showed up, I downloaded it, and it is working fine. I am NOT saying that it is guaranteed that SP1 standalone will cause problems, but for some people, if you can't download it, there may very wel be a reason (drivers aren't compatible, etc.).
