Is there any reason to use the 32bit version?
The 64bit version says "Internet Explorer 64bit cannot be the default browser," why is this?
Will 32bit plugins like flash, shockwave player, vitalize work in the 64bit IE?
Seems more confusing than it needs to be, for now I'm using the x64 application without incident.
(before replying, please note the lack of me asking for your thoughts on how IE stacks up to other browsers)

flash will not work in any x64 browser

somewhere else i've read another reason: find a web page that needs more than 4gb of ram (an individual tab/window/webpage) to display, and then you have need for a 64bit browser. each tab is an individual process in internet explorer, so each can use it's own 4gb of ram. having an individual page that big should not happen (or you have to wait till it loaded 4gb of data over the internet)..
so, in short: you won't ever NEED a 64bit browser. -
I am apparently also a SLOPpy typer....ick.

it can happen.. -
Thanks for clearing that up, guys.
Sort of related: how do I change the windows hosts file in Windows 7? It's telling me my access is denied - but I'm the only account on this PC, and it's obviously an administrator account. -

type "notepad" into the startmenu, rightclick and chose "run as administrator". you're the admin, but normally no app gets admin rights by default.
then go to the hosts file in the file-open dialog, and edit it.
or type notepad in the startmenu, and then press [ctrl][shift] and [enter] to start it. that elevates it, too. -
This...may be frustrating.

why? i just tried it. it works without a problem, and is much longer to explain than to just do
in short
same without going admin (which doesn't work):
as you see, it's only a tiny difference. -

do you need to edit the hosts file often? shouldn't be needed normally.
you plan to do some adblocking with it or so? (we talk about ie here, so it could be). there are addons for ie doing that automatically for you. -
Are there? I've never heard of them working well.

i never tried personally as i prefer firefox with adblock plus. that doesn't add whitespace, but removes them completely. but others may report varying success.

I just switched from firefox to ie yesterday. For ad blocking, i use this and it works very well for me:

New PC came with two versions of IE8, regular and x64 (a few questions)
