I have tried all the defrag programs also this one today, but you cannot beat Vista defag in my opinion.

JKDefrag is basically the same as Vista's built in defrag but faster.

    Is this better than defraggler?

The GUI tool has much more options than just a defragger. However, if you just want the defragger alone, then DL this.
The GUI tool is basically other apps bundled with it in a easy to use interface like Ccleaner, NTREGOPT, Washer, Cleaner, etc. This new version has nothing different that the older version of the defragger. It's changes to the bundled apps, languages, UI, etc.

As far as defragging goes compared to Defraggler, it's preference I guess. Most defrag program use the same MSFT API, but I'm not sure about Defraggler. JKDefrag is my favorite out of all the ones I've used. It's quick and thorough.

Oh I see, whoops should have read your original post, I thought it was just an update to the jkdefrag tool, which is why I asked about that and defraggler.

Thanks for the info though, may have to give the jkdefrag gui a try.

Most of the third party defragmenting apps (including JK defrag) don't defragment MFT fragments like the built in Vista Defrag tool does.

Doesn't 95% of the good defragment tool defratments MFT tables?
    E.g. Diskeeper, perfect disk..etc

he didn't say they don't. he said they don't do it the same way vista defrag does.

one interesting thing about vista defrag is, it doesn't even try to defrag perfectly. it only defragments small fragments, as they affect performance.

It's based on the standard defragmentation API by Microsoft

and that doesn't mean anything about how they defrag. it's about how they sort and organise the data. and each program does so differently. i personally dislike how jkdefrag works as in my experience it makes your system quite snappy for the next reboot, and after some days it massively degrades in performance.

defraggler gives a more constant perfomance in my cases. not that i need it anymore as i move to ssds completely.. :)

From know problems in JK defrag here http://www.kessels.com/Jkdefrag/
The Microsoft defragmentation API on Vista can defragment and move the MFT, but JkDefrag cannot use this capability yet.
    Same with Auslogics here
    http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/faq
Currently we are working on the MFT defragmentation support, so that your MFT can also be defragmented by the program. This feature can be available in one of the future major versions of the program.

Yup, none of the free defraggers can process the MFT yet, in Vista or XP. The built-in vista defragger processes some of the MFT, so it's actually better than the free ones (as well as safer, IMHO).

The heavyweights like Diskeeper 2009 can defrag most of the MFT during a normal defrag, as well as the remainder of the MFT and the page file during the boot-time defrag. But since my PF is set to a static size, and Diskeeper is on automatic defrag mode, I don't recall when was the last time I did a boot time defrag (XP) :)
