    Hey!

    New Version: Paint.NET 3.5 Beta 1

    For Linky, click: HERE

    Change Log:
    * Refreshed user interface with new icons and visual styling. On Windows 7 and Vista, it is enhanced for Aero and "glass".
    * Now uses and requires .NET 3.5 SP1, which has many built-in performance improvements.
    * New effect: Blurs -> Surface Blur, by Ed Harvey
    * New effect: Distort -> Dents, by Ed Harvey
    * New effect: Distort -> Crystalize, by Ed Harvey

    * Effect dialog responsiveness has been greatly improved.
    * Images open much faster, especially on single CPU systems.
    * Selection outline is no longer animated. Instead of "dancing ants", an antialiased and stippled "XOR" outline is drawn.
    * Startup performance on most systems will be better by about 20%.
    * Memory usage has been greatly reduced when more than one image is open.
    * The font system for the Text tool has been completely rewritten, and problems with missing fonts and crashes should be a thing of the past.
    * On Windows XP and Vista, the Text tool has improved text rendering quality (it uses GDI instead of GDI+).
    * On Windows 7, the Text tool will use DirectWrite (instead of GDI) which gives even better performance and quality.

    * The toolbar font list has improved usability, rendering quality, and significantly improved performance.
    * The toolbar font list no longer requires an application restart to recognize newly installed fonts.
    * When many fonts are installed, both memory usage and startup performance have been greatly improved.
    * Installation prerequisites are now installed automatically, such as .NET Framework and Windows Installer.
    * Updates can now be downloaded in the background, and installed automatically once you exit the application.
    * General rendering quality has been improved when zoomed in.
    * Added a "Utilities" menu. Updates, Languages, and Plugin Errors have been moved here.
    * Added a "Manage Fonts" command to the Utilities menu.
    * Clicking the middle mouse button on an image thumbnail will now close the image.
    * Improved the Unfocus effect.
    * The DirectDraw Surface (.DDS) file type now allows you to select the resampling algorithm for auto-generated mip-maps.
    * A processor that supports SSE is now required (almost all CPUs purchased this decade satisfy this).
    * Fixed an issue with Gaussian Blur and its treatment of alpha values.
    * Fixed a crash with the "Units" selector in the toolbar.
    * When zoomed in, it is now much easier to resize a very small selection.
    * Now includes a Russian translation.

    :D

    Cin...

Official image of what it looks like:

The tab interface at the top showing your open images is really nice. The whole program is really refined over previous versions. And it works with Windows 7 jumplists (shows recently opened images)!

I'm much more used to the GIMP interface, but one day, when I have the time, I'll explore Paint.NET. My brother uses Paint.NET, though, so thanks for the heads up :)

I'm not a graphics guru by any means, but isn't GDI+ supposed to be better than GDI? That statement makes it seem that the earlier edition is superior... :p

I downloaded the program and it's quite good actually, especially for being free!
But nothing will beat my beloved Photoshop :D

    For what though?

I know one of my friends said he couldn't find a tool in Photoshop :D (not sure what version)

And I was recently told that Lightroom should be better for developing digital images.

But I still use Photoshop :)

just because i don't post software updates.. :)

but i like the new version, much faster than before, and the look, awesome.

i hope they evolve into a real ribbon on top, as the menu (espencially the effects menu) should go away.

by the time you've written that short post, you would've explored and understood the interface.

left: tools. right bottom: layers. effect menu: effects.

done :) (mostly, it's really a very simple interface).

i would love to praise paint.net by saying my cover art for my first cd is made with it, then again, the art is so minimalistic, it could nearly have been done in paint (but nowhere that quick and easy :))

Paint.net is a useful and more capable paint, but if you want to do some real photo editing I'd highly recommend Photoshop.

just discovered that it has addons. hope the integrate it a bit better (firefox style), then it could get really interesting. some of its lackings could get fixed by them :)

but yeah, photoshop is the "big one". but most users of photoshop don't even touch 1% of it's features, so they could get away with paint.net... :)

Yeah...I can't figure out Photoshop for the life of me. I always have to get someone else to do my editing for me. So this Paint will be useful to me. :)

you scaled at different ratios. once to 1680, once to 1880. obviously, the 1880 one would look more ugly on a 1680 screen, as it would get zoomed twice (and once with ugly default bilinear for wallpapers). and even in original, it looks more blurry as it's just bigger.

Basic photo editing in Photoshop is rather easy, just search for guides on the net when you need to do something. You'll get the hang of it soon enough and before you know it curves, contrast, sharpening, saturation, and RAW image development will be skills you can use to edit your photos instead of having someone else do it for you.
