... stuck on "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer"
This was after starting, registering, downloading FF etc and then a Windows update.
Been 20 minutes.

Unreal, brand new laptop and can't do MS update.
Anyway, after a couple had reboots trying last good, repair a system restore worked. NIS (trial) got screwed up, so I uninstalled and intalled MS Essentials. Will try updates later. -
Sometimes it pays to wait a little longer. I had a Windows update that got seemingly stuck on the progress bar at the same spot for about three hours or so, but it eventually worked itself out.

Yeah, a progress bar with time left would be nice. I got it working with restore and after re-installing Firefox went to Windows update and it said it was already up-to-date. Seems to be working fine now. Hopefully, in the future I won't have to use brute force

Yes, the updates can take a very long time in that state. Leave it on overnight if need be.
