I just bought a new laptop from a well-known online retailer. The only customization I had them do was upgrade the cooling paste. They also informed me they were doing a burn-in test. I've had these things done on/to new laptops before, even through this website.
What's different is that when I took the laptop out of the box and turned it on, it automatically booted up into a user profile just called "User." Every other time I've bought a new laptop, even a custom one, it booted into the new computer set-up.
Is this a new thing that companies are doing? I know it's kind of petty, but the unboxing experience is part of the fun. I kind of felt as if I were buying a used computer, in a way.

That is just like a new car where they talk about adding a rubber under coating to protect it from rust. It's a gimmick to drain your funds so unless they can prove otherwise with verified independent test I would say you got taken for the long ride. They shouldn't even have to do a burn in that was done by the manufacture already.
