    Hi.

I just got a brand new sony vaio cr. AMazing laptop!

Anwyays ive had about 3 laptops in the past and they all came with at least once cd for the operating system. My laptop didnt come with ANY cds! I paid extra for vista business and for Student Offfice 2007. I have the 25 character activation key for both VISTA business and Vista OFFICE.

In the future, how would i be able to install office or vista if i dont have the cds for them>? Are they downloadable? WHat if i upgrade my harddrive...i mean ill need vista on a cd !

    Let me know.

    THANKS :D

I think everything is stored in the recovery partition if you have one.

Call them up and ask for it. You bought vista, you are entitled to a hard copy of it. Same goes for Office.

They've gone from giving you full cds of the programs you buy to giving you nothing more then a recovery cd and from plastic to paper cases for those cds, and now you don't even get that, just a recovery partition on your notebook. Suppose I accidentally delete that partition while trying to install Linux, I have to beg for a hard copy from them? Always looking for ways to cut corners...

Sony is known for this. I don't want to promote a company...but dell gives you the disks.

Also, if you have your product keys, you can probably torrent an ISO of your OS and Office.

You should make ur own recovery dvd's. Sony won't sell you the vista dvd. You can clean install vista later with a windows anytime upgrade dvd. The built in recovery partition in sony laptops allows the system to recover to the factory state. Also read the link in my signature.

There is nothing that says you are entitled to copies of anything. Chances are you agreed to all of this when you bought the system (all in the fine print of course). Recovery discs are the only option.

However, with office, you may be able to recover it from your drive, because there is a complete copy of the install media on the drive somewhere. You'll have to figure out where to get it, but I know that when you install from the DVD, it copies the DVD to the drive, then installs from that. It keeps the DVD on the drive to use as a source when there are updates to office.

No more discussion about torrents or ISOs. While in this circumstance it might seem like a good idea, you might end up downloading a hacker-tweaked version of the OS/Office and suddenly you'll have worse problems. Not to mention downloading that is technically illegal.

Anyway, you should have the ability to burn recovery discs. That is your hard copy. But yes, contact Sony as you may be able to get that stuff.

This is true of all Sony models now. There is a program on the machine that will allow you to create the Restore DVD's. (Do NOT try to use dual layer DVD media. Apparently the application only supports single layer.)

When you buy a computer system, you're also buying the operating system too.. Which you should get.
You saying that is like saying you arent entitled to getting a can of pepsi you buy.

Its not illegal, its illegal to copy the product key. All torrents are is a way to copy a back-up of a program you have ^_~

Agreed. If he has a legal key, he is entitled to a legal backup...and since Sony didn't provide him with one, it is ok for him to get it himself, so long as he uses his legal key.

No, you get the operatiing system. You get a recovery partition that allows you to restore the system. And you get an application that allows you to create a DVD copy of the restore application and partition.

Sony DOES provide him a way to get the backup he needs. There is an app on every Sony that allows you to create recovery DVD's.

A little friendly advice. Talk of torrents and ISO's is NOT permitted here, period, no questions, no exceptions etc. etc. regardless of their legal (or more often illegal) status. Because there is potential for these being illegal, the owners of this forum have made the rule that talk of them is NOT allowed, period. Continue with this talk and you might find your self banned. As part of your signing up to participate here, you agreed to this stipulation.

Well, technically, you did pay for Office and Windows and you should be entitled to the program. My experience with Sony is that they make you pay an additional fee for the "disk" version of the programs.

you can always ask around to borrow a disk from someone... possibly even make a copy... all windows vista disks have all versions on there... the key is the only thing that determines what version is installed... of course i would call Sony first and try to "ask politely" for a new disk...

Sony won't send the disk. They have an option to restore the system to the factory stage from the built-in recovery partition. The OP can also burn the recovery dvd's from the vaio recovery center.
