A week or so earlier, when I was browsing around looking for tips about buying a new laptop, I found this thread about all the stuff that we should do as soon as we get a new laptop with Vista to make it more efficient, as it's much easier to do it then, and saves a lot of trouble in the future.

However, I can't seem to find it again. I can't for the life of me remember the thread title, it isn't stickied, and I couldn't find it in the FAQ.

Does anyone happen to remember? :(

Except... it's not what you should do as soon as you get a new laptop.

It's ok as a collection of tweaks to consider, but not as a list to go through one by one and do everything. You end up turning off most of the best features in Vista.

Just uninstall any third-party programs that came with the laptop that you don't want. Otherwise, Vista's defaults are really good. Get used to the way it runs normally for a couple weeks before deciding to tweak anything.

You also have to remember Vista gets better as time goes on...give it a week or two before completely destroying the services window.

Once you get a new laptops, do the following in their order:

    1) reformat
    2) install all needed programs
    3) disable unneeded startup items
    4) defrag
    5) waste the rest of your natural life on NBR

Why would you reformat the new laptop if it's working well?
