Microsoft released a "preview" of a new engine for the desktop search functionality in Vista. It is supposed to reduce the disk thrashing that some folks experience.

    Link:
Windows Search 4.0 Preview for Windows Vista (KB940157)

NOTE: You MUST have SP1 installed to be able to use this.

Windows Search 4.0 includes the following improvements:
    • Support for the Encrypting File System (EFS)
    • Reduced affect on Microsoft Exchange when you index e-mail in online mode, and there is no local cache (.ost)
    • Support for indexing online delegate mailboxes
    • Support for client-to-client remote query to shared indexed locations
    • Improved indexing performance
    • Faster previewer updates for Windows XP
    • Per-user Group Policy settings
    • Windows software updates for Watson errors

What's the point of the "Faster previewer updates for Windows XP" if it's for Vista SP1 only?

(Vista SP1 and Server 2008 according to the link but still not XP)

There's a Windows XP version for Windows Search. The link is on the bottom of the page, under "related downloads". :)

There is also a SEPARATE download for an XP version further down the page.

Edited: Oops sorry I see that LiveStrong also pointed this out to you.

Isn't that being paranoid? If you have problems a simple system restore will do the trick.

Well, there are no graphical improvements at all. But searching is much faster and responsive. For example, typing s in the search bar in the start menu becomes at least 5 times faster after installing this.

I'm using XP and want to make sure I know what you mean by desktop search engine. Is it just what I get when I go Start Menu --> search?

OK, I'm not that familiar with Vista, how is it better than the standard XP search function, should I get it for XP?
