I've just upgraded from xp and there are a few things that irk me. I'm on windows 7 ultimate, and wondering if anyone can help me with these annoyances.

1 - sometimes when I save images from firefox, it gives me some error about administrator rights or some nonsense. It usually results in me needing to try again, and then it works. very annoying though.

2 - when I game, it always takes a good 5-10 seconds to get back in game when coming back in from a minimize. this is really bad for games like wow where i often browse the web while gaming. this was instant in xp, and occurs in all games.

3 - changing file extensions. whenever i do this is gives me a warning, any way to disable that? it makes changing file extensions long and tedious.

other than that im loving windows 7. Just hoping these are some common annoyances and there's an easy fix.

    thanks!

    1. Disable UAC (User Account Control) its retarded anyway.

    2. You can go to the wow exe, right click it, properties, compatibility, set a mark in "disable desktop composition".. This will make aero be disabled at all times when the game is running so it doesnt switch it on and off which may be why it takes some time.. also try and set the same resolution ingame as you use on the desktop, so it doesnt have to switch resolution all the time.

    3. Not that i know of, sorry.. Is it really THAT bad?

Woah that renaming issue is weird.. Why does it think your desktop is a network location? I cant help you there sorry.

Yes i would recommend windowed mode then.. This is not really an issue, this is just how windows works.. I know that WoW has a 'fullscreen-windowed-mode" feature, why dont you take advantage of that?

This doesn't look like a UAC error. What other programs are you running, like antivirus, tweak and background programs?

    Edit:

Psh, this is what happens when I take a day off from the Windows forums

all Ive got are nod32 antivirus, poweriso, and cpugenie (for undervolting)

hopefully you can help, its getting really annoying, and only happens sometimes, complete randomness. but it also happens to other files too, not just pics. anything i download in firefox has a chance for the error =(

Disable NOD32 and see what happens.

It doesn't look like a UAC problem because, not only do you not get a UAC prompt, you don't even get a Windows prompt. You get a Firefox prompt, which makes me suspect it is something on top of the OS.

Surfasb is right on the money. It is a problem with ESET trying to scan the file on creation. They released 4.0.474 last week to correct the problem, just go to their site and download the new version.

Glad that got fixed. It is a shame people are so fast to blame UAC. UAC has been around for two years now. You would think a piece of software like Firefox would be UAC compatible by now.

Heck maybe I can dig up those old DOS tweaks. Like moving all my TSRs into Upper Mem.

    1. No clue about that, I guess like the previous people said, ensure that you are an admin or allowed to save to where you want. This has nothing to do with UAC, unlike some previous people said. Don't turn off UAC unless you know your way around Windows and you know what programs require which.
    2. Slow computer? My laptop used to do that and now it still does but less of a delay
    3. Don't think there's a checkbox or some easy way to do it, probably a registry hack.

nice, that seems to have fixed it =)

    fred,

the computer isnt slow, its very fast. 4 gigs ram, core 2 p7450, 9800m gs

could it be a hard drive problem? i notice that sometimes in games my loading times are very fast, and other time they are VERY low.

well the renaming thing isn't a problem as much as something i hoped had a setting.

the error when saving files was just fixed, and being caused my nod32.

the slow times when minimizing to windows and going back into games is still there though, and something id like to get sorted out. im wondering if faulty hard drive can do this..

the one ive got is a seagate momentus 320 gig, and since ive got it a few weeks ago it makes a lot of "clicking" and "grinding" sounds. it definitely is something ive never heard from a hard drive before. hd inspecter gives me a 64% health rate, which is drastically low...none of my drives have ever gone under 93%. it also vibrates a lot. half my laptop has a notable vibration from the thing. not sure if any of this is normal with a 7200 momentum, i had a 7200 hitachi that wasnt nearly this bad though.

    ill run hdtune soon

those are my results, look normal to you guys? things i noticed was the constant downward speed and drops to 1mb/s

Another thing i noticed, but you cant tell by the pics, is how long the chart took to "update". on my other hard drives the chart would update every second or two, but on this one i took a good 5 seconds between each update, until the end where it took even longer. ill make a video and show you what i mean.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/702676/hdd.avi

please check out the video. i made it in fraps, uploaded it to dropbox. 15 megs, hdd.avi

I doubt it is your harddrive, otherwise other IO operations would be suffering the same fate (such as the booting process).

Which games are affected? What display driver version are you using?

All games do it. I'm using the newest nvidia drivers, not beta. 186 i believe.

it just takes unusually long to renter a game from an alt+tab. i thought a game like dragon age would make sense since its heavy, but it even does it in wow.

that, together with disabling UAC, and changing the boot process to use 2 processors, that will sure booooost the performance of the system massively. you know, MASSIVELY!!

    :)

oh, don't forget to reconfigure the page file... and the services.. and delete random files in c:\windows (heck, take permission of all, so you can modify at will). that will help...

but the final boost you will get here: www.downloadmoreram.com

Oh the memories... Many, many years ago I got a computer that "just doesn't work anymore". The owner was librarian-type old lady, who had organised the messy c:\Windows\*.* into alphabetical sub-folders. Suprisingly the Win98 held together until reboot every time.

I fixed that twice, after second time I tried my best to explain why the "chaos" was necessary. Either she changed shop, or didn't mess the OS again :)

hehe.. that made my day.. it's only minutes till weekend, and this is just lovely to imagine :)

edit: it reminds me of one in my music production related forum i hang out in. he wanted to post a track he made so we can listen to it. he posted this:

    c:\users\hisname\music\productions\mytrack.wav

it was so sweet :) it showed on the one side how much got logical for us, and still isn't common sense. and it showed, that, actually, pc's really are hard to use. because his solution actually is quite logical, not? (same as her who cleaned up the folder by reordering, bringing structure in :))
