This is my first time on the forum and am hoping for some help. Please bear in mind I have very limited computing skills. The problem I'm having is with my daughter's Inspiron 1501; all of a sudden it's hybernating and we can't get to wake up. Of course have tried power down and power up, but it goes into hybernation within seconds of powering up; consequently I can't get to any command options. OS is Windows Vista Home Basic... Please help and thank you in advance!!!

Try taking the battery out and running off the main power. It is possible that the battery wont hold a charge any more.

Thank you for the suggestion... I just gave it a shot and it did the same thing... Back to hybernation land

I'm tempted to try chucking it out in the street and running over it a few times in my truck  but something tells me I shouldn't

So it starts to hibernate before even getting to the login screen?

Do you see the Dell start up screen? If you do try pressing F12 and starting in safe mode.

I can see the Dell start up screen and press F12 to get to the "boot screen", but don't know where to go from there...

There was an Word application open when it starting doing this that it briefly flashes by before it hybernates. At least it did before I yanked the battery to try that....

Well, if it gets past the Dell startup screen, you can hit F8 to get to your Windows options such as Safe Mode, as mentioned above.

Please bear my knowledge level and abilities...

If I press F12 at the Dell startup screen, it takes me to the "Boot Menu" and my choices are:
    Hard Drive
    USB Storage
    CD-ROM Drive
    Removeable Devices
    Broadcom PXE
    Diagnostics
    <Enter Setup>
are my Windows options in one of those choices?

If I wait any longer than a few seconds, it says "Resuming Windows", then flashes by the Word Application that's open and immediately hybernates. Pressing F8 doesn't change anything, except my frustration level

Hard drive is where it is.
This is probably not the best way to do this but worth a try.
run off AC power. Let it get to windows and before it can start/finish hibernating, remove power. That normally will give an error on next bootup and you should have to do a fresh boot.
F8 is what you should press just after your Dell logo screen comes up.

hit the window key and it will bring up the start menu. Hit control panel. The cursor will default to the search box. Type "hibernation" and there should be an option to turn hibernation on and off.
