My notebook is using Vista Ultimate, and I;m trying to shrink my C drive. I don't understand why it won't allow me to do this even though I am the adminitrator. Can someone please explain why this is happening and how I can make it work? I really need some help with this, so please help if you can.

You can try some software, Easeus Partition Manager Home Edition, I used it, and it worked pretty good. Link

You need to use a third party partition manager, and use the boot utility (you have to do it outside of Windows).

I don't know what you mean by special permission grayed out---unless you mean SHRINK VOLUME in the context menu is grayed out.

If so, there is a chance the problem is you have files at the end of your drive. Windows will shrink volumes from the back end so you need to defragment and move files to the front first

Download MYDEFRAG and run an analyze--what does the disk map look like?

Run a monthly optimize defrag (maybe even run it twice) to move all the files to the front of the disk. Then try to shrink the volume again

Threads merged. Like gerryf19 mentioned, it's poor forum etiquette to double post.

To shrink a partition with Windows on it, you'll have to use some boot tool such as GParted.
